People flashing brights and causing with you ?

No, he was awake when he was dropped off. It is still a bit of a drive from PTA to Hillbrow...

did you ask him what the eff is problem was ? :P i think its justice though

I've flashed at people who drive with their rear fogs on, and lots do it. It irks me so much, it's blinding at night and makes brake lights less visible.

It looks like most people here find rear fog more bothersome than brights in front, no? Why is this? How do you survive evening traffic with all the brake lights?

Brights are annoying too. But I do find rear fogs more irritating than front fogs.

The problem is that it often conceals the brake lights, which can make it difficult to judge when somebody is actually slowing down.

You don't notice the brake lights as much as would with the rear fogs off.

I've had a few instances where I haven't seen brake lights and almost rear ended someone. (due to fogs or brakes lights not working at all). Yes, maybe I was daydreaming, but that's why cars have brake lights - so you can instantly see when a vehicle is slowing down or stopping.

Rear fogs are used for for just that - fog...

I can only assume you trolling...cos, incase you havent noticed...rear fog lights are MUCH brighter than rear brake lights....where is that facepalm smiley? :p Hehehehe :D

Now with the troll label. I just find front bright driving much more annoying and dangerous, takes me a few moments to adjust from such bright lights. Rear fogs don't bother me so much, I only ever notice them on VW because you can see the difference with them having only one rear fog light.

I see.

As long as he has a reasonable shot at protecting himself thats fine.

@R13: For the rear lights you need to gain info from it (breaking or not). For the front you don't need to actively watch for changes in the lighting. Hence interference from rear fog lights is more problematic.

Hey peeps!

I've had this happen to me about 3 times this year :/ usually late at night when driving home from a club etc. A car will be behind you on the highway/street and they will flash there brights at you for no apparent reason. I change lanes, they change lanes. They then drive on my ass flashing brights and trying to get me to pull over (normal cars not police), i got rid of 2 by drving like a maniac and losing them, the one i drove in circles for a half an hour until they just drove off.

Just wondering if its happening to anyone else there in the Gangsta's Paradise ? scares the crap out of me each time! I don't know what the eff is happening or what they are wanting or trying to achieve.

I drive an Alfa, so not like its a high risk car or anything ?

So this happened 3 times allready? Did it happen on the same night? Was it the same car following you? Bad neighborhood?

also

You don't suffer from paranoia, right?

Edit: I heard from a friend that he used LSD when he was young, early twenties. Now, mid thirties, he gets this flashbacks wen he is driving at night. Like trees coming to life and jumping infront of him and then all of a sudden disappear. I'm not aiming anything at you with this story, just thought I could share this funny story...

If someone flashes me from behind, and I am not doing anything wrong (eg driving slow in the fast lane) or whatever.. I just slow down until they get bored.

In my experience it is normally rude people in a rush who do this, and if they are going to be rude by flashing at me, I am going to respond by making them later than they are already.

Flashing brights is a legal way of indicating you would like to overtake the vehicle in front of you. Obviously dont make it into a disco party, but its perfectly legal and you are actually being the idiot in this scenario

Are those bright rear lights actually intended for fog, or to give more light when reversing? I'm asking because I've seen them in both red and white, and they are normally located quite high on the vehicle. Front fogs are located low so as to shine the beam underneath the fog.

And yes, it is actually illegal to drive with fog lights on when there is no fog. The same way that it is illegal to drive with hazards on, except when you are in an emergency situation. But that is another topic altogether. ;)

Legal? Maybe.

Irritating and childish? Yes.

If you want to overtake, wait until it is safe to do so and then overtake. Do not try to make me risk my safety for your problems. It is illegal to drive over the yellow line; you are asking me to commit a (minor) crime.

Doing so is a courtesy that I might pay you to allow you to overtake - but if, and only if, it is safe for me to do so. And if someone is right on my bumper flashing lights it is by no means safe to do so.

On the other hand, I usually pull over into the side lane to allow cars to pass, if they are not flashing their lights.

I will not do so if bullied.

Not maybe, it is legal to do so, under certain conditions.

Good grief man, learn what is legal or not before making such statements:

Reg 298A of the National Road Traffic Act applies:

Prohibition on driving on shoulder of public road, except in certain circumstances

Reg 298A.(1) Subject to subregulation (2) and regulation 298(1)(e), no person shall drive a motor vehicle on the shoulder of a public road.

(2) Notwithstanding subregulation (1), the driver of a motor vehicle may, during the period between sunrise and sunset, drive such motor vehicle on the shoulder of a public road which is designated for one lane of traffic in each direction—

(a) while such motor vehicle is being overtaken by another vehicle; and

b) if he or she can do so without endangering himself or herself, other traffic, pedestrians or property on such public road;

(c) if persons and vehicles upon a public road are clearly discernible at a distance of at least 150 metres.

Legal? Maybe.
Not maybe, fact. Regulation 323 of the National Road Traffic Act clearly states you may flash your lights as an indication that you want to overtake

Irritating and childish? Yes.
What? If someone is able to safely move out of the way, and do not, then you let them know that you want to overtake by flashing your lights. How is this childish at all?

If you want to overtake, wait until it is safe to do so and then overtake. Do not try to make me risk my safety for your problems. It is illegal to drive over the yellow line; you are asking me to commit a (minor) crime.
/facepalm
Show me where I asked you to commit a crime or endanger yourself? You're fabricating scenarios now. Nevermind that its not a crime to drive on the shoulder, given that its daytime, and its safe to do so. Best you go read Regulation 298A of the National Road Traffic Act.

Doing so is a courtesy that I might pay you to allow you to overtake - but if, and only if, it is safe for me to do so. And if someone is right on my bumper flashing lights it is by no means safe to do so.
Again, did I say you must endanger yourself to let another person overtake? No. So what are you on about?

On the other hand, I usually pull over into the side lane to allow cars to pass, if they are not flashing their lights.

I will not do so if bullied.

Someone driving and acting legally is bullying you? I say again, you are the one who is behaving poorly in this scenario, mostly because of your ignorance of what is actually legal

So you assume that a car following me has a better view of the road and potential hazards in front than I do? That the car behind me can tell when it is safe for me to move over? That my car is in fact completely transparent and not blocking any part of their view of the road ahead?

In my original post I stated that it was in fact night time when I refused to move over. As you quoted above, it is legal to pull over during daylight hours.

If safe to do so.

I would argue that it is not safe to do so with an unpredictable vehicle flashing its lights, which indicates at worst a case of road rage and at best a level of impatience that would probably affect the driver's concentration.

Any driver who has managed to pass his learners is capable of telling when a car behind wishes to overtake. This is normally through observing the following car come close, use right indicator, and move closer to the center line in order to see if there is oncoming traffic.

Does the following car really need to flash his headlights?

Again, did I say you must endanger yourself to let another person overtake? No. So what are you on about?
Driving in the shoulder is inherently more dangerous. There is no space to manoeuvre if there is a hazard, especially if there is a car overtaking and taking up the normal left lane. It is my choice - and my choice alone - whether I will risk my life to allow you to pass.

Otherwise, there is also a perfectly legal alternative for you: simply wait until there is no oncoming traffic, indicate, pull out into the right lane, and overtake as normal.

Someone driving and acting legally is bullying you? I say again, you are the one who is behaving poorly in this scenario, mostly because of your ignorance of what is actually legal

Bullying tactics. I do not feel "bullied" but flashing lights is a form of intimidation: get out of my way.

You seem to think just because something is legal, everyone should do it. There are many things that are legal but should not be done by everyone, as I am sure you can understand. It is legal for me to stick my hand out the window and give you the finger - but I am sure you can understand that not everyone should do this.

Ok most of your post is just utter nonsense so I'll reply only to whats pertinent

I would argue that it is not safe to do so with an unpredictable vehicle flashing its lights, which indicates at worst a case of road rage and at best a level of impatience that would probably affect the driver's concentration.

So lets gets this straight. Signalling intent makes one unpredicatable? ROFL
Scenario:
Rear car signals intent to overtake by flashing lights once
You in the forward car: "Hmmm he signalled he wants to overtake, I wonder what he'll do next?? So unpredictable, he says he wants to overtake, but I have no idea what he'll do next now"

Can you see how utterly absurd that is!? You're basically saying that if a car puts on its right indicator, that car has become unpredictable, that you have no clue that that car now wants to turn right or change lanes to the right. :wtf:

Can you see the logical flaw in your conclusion?

I will point it out:

Scenario:

...
You're basically saying that if a car puts on its right indicator,

Headlights are used for illuminating the road ahead at night.

Indicators are used for notifying other vehicles that you intend to turn, change lanes or overtake.

If you are using your headlights as indicators, you are doing it wrong.
