Performance in Cape Town

Spoke too soon, didn't I? Over the weekend, things were looking back to normal.
Today, it's back to just plain pathetic! Did same www.toast.net speed test at 10pm (how much internet traffic to congest things at this time?)

back to 12K

Hi, Ekhaatvensters

I don't have an external aerial and personally I don't even mind buying one but when the speeds drop so dramatically after one of their obvious tweaks to the system, why should their subscribers be forced to upgrade their equipment?

A gradual degradation of the speed due to a growing network would be an acceptable problem but if from Thursday night to Friday morning all of a sudden I should accept an 80% loss of speed, don't try and tell me that it's an unfixable problem without getting an external aerial.

Either they're having a big technical problem (likely) OR they've hit the throttle switches (possible) OR they have no clue how their own network functions.

PS:I don't know what an 'aggie' is but I don't think I'm one. (It just doesn't sound like me;) ) I'm just the kind of guy that will never raise a peep if things are addressed in reasonable times with reasonable explanations or responses...

...But if they refuse to be forthcoming or give me a bunch of lies (as has happened once before - although I do think that it was caused by the customer service guys not being filled in by the people who really know what's going on) I will escalate right to the boardroom members in whichever city they find themselves in the world.

Okay you arent a 28er... prison gang... I was just checking if you were some kind of wannabe internet-gangster, you sounded pretty dodge with your words in that first post haha.

I dont mean that you have to upgrade your equipment because of their thecnical fault at all, I meant for your connection in general. 20-40kb isn't great for Iburst at all, well not at night at least. The Antenna will probably not fix the problem, in fact it definately wont. It will help alleviate the problem for you right now but also give you a big speed boost when (or if) things go back to normal.

Ekhaatvensters, I know about the WBS recommended antennas, but you suggested that I "check out a high gain antenna for R500, the non-WBS one."...

Which one did you have in mind and do you know who would retail it here in good ol' Cape Town? Thanks.

Cache server replacment????

Hi

Iburst/WBS are telling me that the Cape Town cache server is down and will only be replaced at the end of the month.... not sure how true this is.... looks more like they have been capped.

If they are only replacing it at the end of the month does that mean they do not have money for it?

Also if they leave it until then they should credit all of our accounts for the crappy speeds we are all getting right now.

I just called helldesk and according to them wbs are busy working on the problem now and I was told it should be at normal speed by Thursday afternoon.

I'm sure not going to hold my breath as they've told me BS stories before.

MrH..... thats the story the orcs feed me on friday.....

Please tell me that this is not a normal thing with Iburst.....:(

I can't tell you it is not a normal thing with wbs because it is whether we like it or not.:(

Good system run by a crappy greedy SA company but still better than helkom.

You can take a look at them here: http://www.phoenixnet.co.za/shop/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=81
They cost R530 apparently and are a bit stronger than the WBS supplied ones. Unfortuantely this company is in Gauteng, they do ship to the rest of the country but this might push the price up to higher than the WBS antenna. It could still be worth it, but try and find a company in CPT that sells them and let me know if you do.

The antenna is directional though, so you have to know in which direction your tower is situated from you, but you can always just turn it around till you find the best signal. Anyway Plumbstead isn't too hard to find from retreat, the tower is right on the Main road in plumbstead, very close to Springbok Computers and the plumbstead library and Ashers pharmacy if any of those landmarks help :)

My connection seems slightly better today, but there are still problems. They have most likely just made some sort of a provisional fix to the problem.

Didn't they promise to have it fixed by the end of last week as well??
And now someone else claims it could only be fixed by the end of the month with the cache server. So how do they claim to fix it by the end of this week? Someone is lying to us like usual, might just be WBS...

well, if my connectiom were as slow as that for the past month, i would have asked for a refund for that month.......
Maybe you guys should ask for some compensation

Connection was dead for about 2hrs even though I could get an IP from the tower.
I guess wbs were busy with it and now local is flying, BUT international is very dead and I can't get to any sites outside SA.

If dealing with the accounts dept is anything like the response we've all had from the helpdesk, we'd have a better chance of poking a pound of butter up a wildcat's arse with a toothpick.

So much for the 20min outrage as it's been up and down ever since both local and international.:(

What I've noticed in the past 2 weeks since wbs started "messing" with the base stations is that it now forces an IP change a few times a day, before that I could hold an IP almost a whole month as long as I never disconnected.

At the moment it is fast and as it used to be, lets just hope they stop messing with it in CT and rather play with the towers in JHB since those guys are use to crappy connections.

Is anyone else getting speed bursts in downloads?? Out of a few files I've download, speeds went above 1000kb/s and the one went at 11000kb/s but the strange thing was it actually went that speed because i was downloading a 11mb file and as soon as I clicked,a second later it finished:cool:

Looks like speeds are back to almost zero again both local and international.
