Petition against Eskom

Sorry to say but petitions are useless, especially internet petitions.

About as meaningless as it gets, I am afraid. Besides, the only body Eskom actually listens to are those dudes who occupy time and space in parliament.

signed - and for the rest of you - at least something attempted that failed is better than not attempting it at all.

True what we should do is take mass action. In France when the price of diesel went sky high in 2008 the farmers dumped manure on the streets of Paris & viola the price was subsidised.

Long we have made petitions & started threads its time we DO something. Stop paying eskom bills hack into prepaid boxes etc

The proposed R29 billion World Bank loan to Eskom South Africa should not be extended because it would contribute to energy poverty, environmental destruction and climate change worldwide. We call on you to reject the loan and, instead, to finance renewable energy and efficiency projects.

While I agree that building more coal power stations is a bit stupid given environmental concerns, this petition gives no alternative solutions. I haven't done any research on renewables, but I would at least expect the people organising this petition to suggest some other R29 billion investment that can add at least 1700 MW (based on the fact that Medupi power station costs R80 billion and will produce 4788 MW) base load generation to Eskom's power grid. If you can't find a satisfactory renewable alternative, then you're wasting everyone's time.

You do realise that the only real clean substitute for coal would be nuclear.
While nuclear might be "cleaner" than coal power there usually is a lot of opposition towards it, there would most likely be a petition against that as well.

i'm trying to understand the fuller picture here...
sure, coal fired options are bad, but are they worse than the alternatives?
how do wind, water, solar, nuclear, biomass and other options compare on price, delivery time, total environmental impact, location, local re-investment, power output, maintenance, fuel availability and efficiency?
i'm all for clean energy, but i also don't want to pay even higher prices, or sit in the dark when the current capacity is reached.
i'm lazy. if you want votes, give me the info to make a decision.

and, the real issue with the power price hikes is that not enough money is being asked for by eskom from ratepayers.
which is worse: starting a project and realising in 5 years time that not enough power stations have been built, or erring on the side of caution and slightly overcatering for our energy needs?
this was a major point when the new power increases were first tabled.

because really this money is just going to got into the salaries and bonuses for the heads of Ek'sDom and then we pay through our noses so they can pay the WB back

Lets all sign a petition why people who get the attention toi-toi's and burns **** down because they're unhappy.

civil vs uncivil. which gets the most attention/best reaction?

Not only that, but the contract for the power station is given to Hitachi, which is 25% owned by Chancellor's House (read ANC Investment) and they stand to get a hefty R1bn profit out of the deal, making the ANC the richest political party ever... Bloody sleezeballs: They cause the shit at Eskom (no maintenance, yet fat bonuses) then devise a scam where they stand to "earn" R1bn in profit, with the normal man in the street having to pay off a R29bn loan via sky high electricity rates!

While all that may be true. I don't think the petition is objecting to Eskom's bonuses or tender processes. I think it's about money being spent on dirty technologies. I won't sign the petition (I think it's an empty symbolic gesture), but I am very interested in renewable energy ideas which can provide real world alternatives to coal given the time frames and budget constraints Eskom is under. The issue of Eskom bonuse and ANC enrichment practices is interesting but not on topic.

Hmmm let's think about this - we live in a country with lots of sunshine - I wonder how we could generate electricity from that. Hmmmm we have coastal cities besieged by some of the strongest winds I wonder how we could generate electricity with that. Hmmmmm we have farms generating TONS of cow dung - I wonder how we could generate energy/electricity with that. Hmmm we are almost out of coal - lets go with that option.

Stupid idiots.

P.S. our friendly neighbor Namibia has some of the best grade Uranium in the world. I wonder how expensive it would be as an interim to put up one or two nuclear reactors while we go green.... hmmmm and I wonder.
