Kia Picanto 1.1 Diesel - Not available, as you've stated
Ford Ikon 1.4 TDCi
Hyundai Getz 1.5 CRDi - Poor seller
Toyota Yaris 1.4 D-4D - Not available, as you've stated
VW Polo1.4 TDI - Been off the market for about 2 years at least

The Picanto and Yaris diesels aren't available locally because they're too expensive compared to their petrol equivalents.

Your point? Fact still remains that you should buy diesel IF you prefer or need the characteristics of a diesel, NOT to save money. Should've added 'in local context' to my original post, though. Still need my morning coffee...

Diesels are brilliant.

That being said, they are expensive to maintain. The fuel costs you save, you put pack into the maintenance ;)

The OP stated he wants to buy a keeper not a 3-5 year car. For that reason and that reason only, I say get a Petrol. If it's the power of the Diesel that you like, get a V6 petrol bakkie. Not as powerful as a diesel but more than enough power.

Diesel cars are not Life long cars. They will start breaking the bank once they start hitting high KM's.

I drive diesel and love the economy.

You must have a maintenance plan, though, as it will be expensive if you plan to keep the car a wee bit.

We need to remember here that we actually still get really filthy diesel compared to the EU diesel.
