Bad news about the petrol price in South Africa — but there is a silver lining

South Africans will not see fuel prices decrease on the same scale as the increases experienced in recent months, even following a fuel price review.

This is according to Layton Beard, spokesperson for the Automobile Association of South Africa (AA), who indicated that South Africans would at least get clarity on fuel prices if a review takes place.

Considering the amount of taxes that increased on it I do not imagine it will. Oil prices have been at this point before and petrol was around R14l and the exchange rate wasn't much better.

So let me get this straight.
The government has 50% of the price as taxes because they cant work with money example the RAF that rents chairs for R6k a month where they could have bought it once off for R3k.

SANRAL cries because they dont have funds to fix the roads.

Yet our beloved government wants to swoop down as saviors and re-look at the way its getting calculated.

Simple solution for the RAF. Everyone that uses the road should have insurance else you wont be able to drive on the roads.
The taxi owners must have third party insurance for all the passengers.

You'll get those that will argue why must they pay 3rd party, the RAF also doesn't only cover the car but medical expenses blah blah. But the RAF generally takes years to cover those expenses anyway.

Then you'll get those who say, keep the RAF and run it competently.

But due to corruption and incompetence we are having to find workarounds.

The only clarity we will get if there is a change in calculations is that somehow they will manage to find a way to increase the levy/taxes on fuel while pretending to lower the overall cost.

The RAF was a good idea in theory (like a lot of policies) but when it comes to implementation its crap. They should scrap it, and just mandate that every driver have a minimum 3rd party cover insurance policy (or tie it to the license disc).

What sort of compliance do you expect? Around TV licence levels or closer to e toll levels?

the CANCerous government thugs, need to stop stealing and reduce the thieving taxes on the fuel. One of the biggest reasons for the Heavey fuel price is thanks to these anc thugs

Dunno, you should present proof of insurance when you renew your vehicles license disc?

Other countries manage it just fine. Unless you're happy to keep paying all that money for RAF out of the petrol price, and 3rd party insurance anyway.

I don't like paying for the RAF and would prefer if everyone had insurance. That said, I don't expect the uptake to be good.

Don't bet your house on it............(or your car)

Of course not. Imagine how much bang the fuel companies have over government? They're making money, government makes money out of taxes, shops are making money because *pray hands* things cost more, and we are more out of pocket.

This is how it works when Government decides on pricing - Government decries high prices of fuel and says what the new price is capped at R10/l. Like the recent Covid tests Comp Comm idiocy. Refiners/suppliers can't supply at this new low price. No supply of fuel at that price point because profit margins are negative. No fuel, empty shelves like Zim. Free economy at work.

Instead Gov should rather remove their own excessive taxes and dysfunctional parasites like RAF. Instead the central planning overlords will simply break the existing market or do nothing.

Everything in SA is about tax payers paying for incompetence, lack of ability, not willing to be accountable and corruption.

Taxis, road worthy certificates, drivers licensed, how many buy the above rights/certificates? Expand this a bit, our 33% pass rate is the base of it all. None of this is going to change without major mindset changes.

If you look at the deregulate retail price of diesel, what sort of retail margin do you see? Probably close to the R2 per litre margin on petrol.

The truth is that govt doesn't thumb suck the basic fuel price. For petrol, they used prices in Singapore and the Mediterranean, and shipping costs to SA. We can argue about which regional prices should be used, but the wholesale petrol prices in North America, Europe and Asia are very similar.
