Petrol sales drop

Honestly though, who here does not realistically expect petrol to go up? Oil was @ $140 a barrel last time I looked, so thats a HUGE factor. We also have fuel a lot cheaper than Europe? Why ? if we claim that its the government taxing us heavily on fuel, do the European governments milk their cows even more?

Note I'm not a supporter of the current gov but I don't blame them for the fuel price. Murder, rape and robberies, yes, but not fuel.

Um, who here was blaming the fuel price government on the government? Yes people often do, but nobody in this thread was, and I certainly hope you didn't interpret my comment that way because I used the word "tax"; if so, you completely (but completely) missed the point.

Because corporations have even more power, especially if they collude, combine or monopolize, that the union/s at best can just match that power for the underpowered workers.

Boo hoo, nobody owes a labourer a job. Let them start their own companies if colluders push margins high. Sure sure, I hear you argue that there are obstacles placed in the path of small businesses - yes, but in most cases you find that the reason those obstacles are there are not because of free markets or because corporations inherently have this kind of power, but because of government meddling and corruption / crony capitalism --- typically in the form of legal / regulatory obstacles that are designed to give a huge advantage to established dominant companies, but that are dressed up to look like laws trying to "help the little guy" (e.g. the NCA, or Radebe's taxi route monopoly system). Cartels are usually in effect a 'symptom' rather than a 'cause' in the long cause and effect chain that eventually hurts labourers.

Why do we even need people to pour our petol for us? I wish they'd adopt self service pumps.

And then you have more unemployment.

So you are saying we should keep these unnecessary jobs as a form of welfare.

That's fine, so long as you call it what it is - welfare - and not try 'disguise it' as something else.

Imagine if even some of that freed up labor actually did something constructive, hmm ...

The last time I went to the mall I almost died laughing. There was a dude at the automatic parking ticket vending machine that pushed the big green button for me and handed me the ticket. And no, it was not a difficult corner or anything, the ticket machine was half an arms length away from my car window :D

Now if that is not job creation I don't know what is :D

but I don't blame them for the fuel price

Er... how then do you explain how Sasol is currently laughing all the way to the bank... they are coining it these days with the high prices.

The Brackenfell Hypermarket fuel station was one of the first to do this around 1983, and reducing the price - it didn't last long because the fuel tankers no longer delivered.
