Petrol?

must be nice to be able to put the whole country in a stand still just cos you want a 1% bigger increase...

That is what we don't really realize. The workers actually have the power, the rest are puppets on a string.

They are effectively putting a big part of the country "back onto their feet" again :-)

the power lies with the few union leaders..

8% isnt even a bad increase..

These guys deserve to be able to feed their families too - they're not exactly coining it.

oi, just been to 3 garages in Centurion - Wierdapark / Eldoraigne area, all of them empty! I've got about 100km left... Anybody knows about a filling station with petrol in the Centurion area? I only need the petrol by Monday... How do we find out when they will deliver pertol again?

Thanks!

Now these good folks will keep the country in a stand still for weeks and they will settle for 8% the economy will suffer cos people cant get to work and the whole strike would have been a waste of time.

Just look at the public sector strike people died cos of medial staff shortages and in the end they did not get the 12% they wanted but settled for a 2% increase IIRC.

Anyway yesterday at all the garages in about a 20km radius from me had more than 30 cars in the queue and today none of them have any petrol.

mostly dried up in pta east - constaniapark/garsfontein.
:p

Got some at the Wierdapark Engen (next to the Spar in Theuns van Niekerk street). When I drove past there the fuel truck was there. Wish everybody will just chill and buy when their cars are empty!

ofcourse, but whats wrong with 8%? whats inflation at now?

Unions will never be happy whatever the percentage is, organizing strikes is what keeps them in business.

I wonder what the unions charge for membership monthly? Is it less, more or equal to the 1%?

Honestly these workers aren't "holding up the country" it's the idiots that panic buy that's creating a problem! No one is irreplaceable especially in SA where the majority are unemployed.

I simply won't believe that the companies that list the top of the list for most revenue in the world will allow a bunch of striking workers let their revenue drop drastically, it simply wouldn't make financial sense, you can be sure they worked out the numbers of settling VS. letting the strike continue and picked the most financially feasible. (which is probably why they picked 8% above that number it would make more sense to let the strike continue than to settle)

Petrol strike end in sight
04/08/2007 14:20 - (SA)

The Delta II rocket carrying the Phoenix Mars lander lifts off at Cape Canaveral in Florida. Phoenix is scheduled to land on Mars in May of 2008. (Terry Renna, AP) Johannesburg - The petrol strike which led to countrywide fuel shortages and panic buying could end by Saturday, the Chemical, Energy, Paper, Printing, Wood, and Allied Workers' Union (Ceppwawu) said.

"We think that it's possible" Ceppwawu spokesperson Welile Nolingo said just after 13:00 on Saturday.

He said Ceppwawu and the National Petroleum Employers Association had just broken into caucus meetings.

The union were waiting for the employers to come back to it about certain positions it had put on the table, said Nolingo.

The caucus meetings should not last longer than an hour he said, but the parties did not seem to be taking a lunch break.

"We will continue with starving stomachs," he said.

Negotiations resumed at the Chamber of Mines in Johannesburg on Saturday morning.

Earlier, Ceppwawu spokesperson Keith Jacobs said he was "very optimistic" about the talks.

He said "first prize" would still be a 9.5% increase but a national bottom-line of 8.5% had been established.......

And I agree, no matter what the issue, they took a decission this year that they will strike no matter what! (whether it makes sense or not:mad:)

one of the main problem is the top brasses pocketing to much for their worth and giving to little to the well deserved payment of the 'bottom' employees....

inflation i think is at 5.9% so 8.5% is fair. I filled up today and i think the situation is being blown out of proportion.

Shell garages seem to be running as if it is business as usual.

Lol, I got a full tank. They reason people are "panic" buying is because they want to make sure they can go to work and do the things they must do. You cant fault them for it.

nah i got no problem with people ensuring they have a week of hassle free driving.

we dont exaclty have a great public transport system to depend on so i understand the panic. thats why i filled up today too. :)
