Hi guys

I have a Vodacom contract due for upgrade next month, so I am going to get my mum a new phone.

So I narrowed it down to the following:
1594117716661.png

Considerations:
  • Age - most released 2019/2020
  • Obviously cheaper is better
  • She doesn't have large hands, so I don't want something huge
  • OS - 10 is better, released on 10 even better as more likely to get an update
  • I prefer Snapdragon as parents have 2 Motos with SD and they have lasted and performance is okay. Also when I upgrade them in future I would like to custom rom/experiment, like I am gonna do with the Moto, and SDs have more support usually
  • More memory and Ram is better, I listed base as I don't know which VC stocks, so worst case
  • Battery - larger is better but also screen size is a factor

Your constructive thoughts or recommendations welcome

Any idea if I can upgrade at Game on a Vodacom deal?

I see they have that for R169pm

out of those probably Id go for one of the nokia phones,

those are all part of the Android ONE program with major releases guaranteed
so one gets updates to the firmware and security updates..

Samsung is an obvious choice (Due to the popularity in South Africa), but I recently noticed with my Dad's new Samsung A31: Ads....
Samsung apps like the dialer, files, health has some ad in them... Looks like I am not alone: https://www.androidpolice.com/2020/...er-samsungs-galaxy-smartphones-and-im-fed-up/

I'd prefer some other brand...

Don't pick the Nokia 2.2 and I'd avoid the 2.3 due to the MT6761, it's not a great processor. Note that the newer mediatek series is great, the G77 and Dimensity 800/820/1000+ series, but they're all mid-range and up and should only be coming to market now.

I wouldn't pick LG due to basically no OS update support.

Note the new Nokia 3.3 should be announced within the next two months, but that's quite long to wait for something if you need it now. The Snapdragon 460 is a huge upgrade (android authority states Qualcomm claims a 70% improvement over the 450), and the 3.3 should probably have it on launch.

I'm assuming the price per month includes data? Since 169*24= R4k and the 3.2 is R2.7k on takealot currently. This is the 4.2, 3GB RAM model for R3k (R125 a month average).
3000mAh should be fine for this segment though, you're powering half the pixels of most mid-range phones and those come with 3500-4000mAh batteries. Android 9/10 also has a lot better battery management than older Android versions.

Just throwing this in here for the hell of it:

I've a little Nokia1. Had it for more than a year now. No issues. Tough and small and easy to use.

Runs Android GO without ever freezing on me. Not even once since I've had it.
Not fast. Thing's take a second longer to do than a phone costing maybe 5X as much. Current price if you can find one in stock is around R800.

The longer you use this little phone the more you appreciate it's toughness, ease of use and excellent call clarity.

Perfect for me. For R800 nothing can touch it. This post typed on it like all my others here for the last year.

Yeah the new Dimensity chips coming out have been highly vaunted.

Data isn't an issue, wifi.

The month works for that 4.2 but I am hesitant on dropping the full cash amount.

I will shop around this weekend as well.

You can also buy on credit.

WhatsApp daily. Family, friends, work stuff. Don't do FB. Internet browsing quick using Firefox with an Ad block. So, this cheap little phone takes me wherever I wanna go. And never crashes.

I've Excel installed. Runs that well so I can keep track of work money paid to me etc. Can do PDF circuit diagrams too so I can be in the workshop and productive and can do stuff quicker.

Around 2000 part and other files stored on SD card. I can go on and on.

And this little phone has never let me down. Pushed it beyond what it was made for. And it has never failed me.

Not the fastest kid on the block. But it's stable. Like me lol.

:)

on mobicred right? how does that work cos it 220 which is fine, then they talk about monthly fees and 20% interest
You will need to register and check. I haven't personally used it. I am sure they will give all the details. But just another option if you don't or can't spend cash.

checked their faqs. not very helpful.

Anyways, personally I don't see the point or need in creating credit or contract for cellphones. Maybe in the past when the options were limited and smart phones were $$$. But now there are some affordable phones out. (Unless you want to go for those 20K phones, ain't nobody buy them cash.)
