Phonebook number not displaying name???

Ok, I admit, I really feel dumb right now, this seemingly easy thing completely stumped me now. Here it goes:

I have this contact on my phonebook, the thing is each time I dial the number or receive a call from this contact the name doesnt get displayed - only the actual number. Same thing with sent and received sms'. Initially I thought I had a duplicate, I checked, no, its not a duplicate.

What could be the issue here? Using the E71.

Are you using any of those dodgy3rd party s60 applications that pretend to enhance your life but end up screwing about with the settings?

The hidden dupe lurking somewhere (else, other than the assigned name) in the depths of the phone book is the usual culprit here - but you said you've checked for that. So how about checking up on your ..err.. checking up and erasing the entry you DO know is assigned to that number and see what happens the next time round?

@bdt, ya I did erase the entry at some time and ofcourse same thing. As in when making/receiving calls/sms' only see the number.

I don't know if its a possibility but is that particular number saved as that number? (Instead of a name). Had someone prank me and do that once. I was baffled.

No, its saved under a normal contact name, e.g. "Maelly", and there's other nos as well like Mobile, Work, Fax etc. But none of them displays the actually name, e.g. "Maelly" when dialed - but the no itself.

Have a Nokia 5800 and experienced the same problem. Somebody gave me the advice to move the contacts from sim to phonemem. Did not help, it's still the same, only certain names appear. Would love if somebody have the answer

We don't have that choice AFAIK. The contacts HAVE to be on the phone memory. I would check that they are definitely stored there.

When storing on sim memory u get limited options. But u right that doesn't solve it. I'm gonna delete the entry once again and see

It could be that you got the same last seven digits on another contact.
ie, 012-9876543 and 082-9876543.
Sompe people are lucky and have the same number on 2 networks like 082 and seven digits AND 083 and same seven digits, the phone doesnt recognise the difference.

Few years back, I had an Ericsson 388 and I could dial with hashes and stars about 30 different characters but if the last seven digits were same as my home number, it would display "Home Calling"

We have the same problem with one number on our office E51. I've also tried deleting the phone book entry and re-saving from the call log but every time we receive a call from that number it shows the number and not the name.

Put in another SIM and try again.

I don't know if you share the shame problem i have with my n73, but i've noticed that if replace the first digit of the number, i.e. '0' (zero) with a '+27', the contact's name shows...

Not sure how will that help? But have nothing to lose so m gonna try it out.

International format: (+27 vs 0)

I know that, but it just depends on a phone. When receiving a call my phone displays the # in standard format (0) but it shows the int std (27) when receiving an sms.

But as u say, whether u have stored an entry with a 27 or 0 it doesn't make any difference as the phone recognise that as the same #.


This whole thing is actually messing me up, yeah its a none issue but just annoying the heck out of me. I had deleted the contact for the past 3 days and when I received calls from it, it still showed the # to prove that there's no duplicate. I have tried to store it under different names but still ain't helping!!!!!

Problem solved! I formatted the phone! Well, I have a bit of problem with the phone other than the contact thing which led me to format!
