Photoshop Elements vs Freeware

My mom is going to give me her original copy, as I want to learn a few photo tools.

I've just downloaded Paint.Net which is free and powerful too.

Is PAint.Net equivilant - or just I just try Elements? Is it easy to use with a nice GUI?

Why bother with freeware if you're getting PE?

PE is great - the biggest advantage: LOTS and LOTS of support on the net. Happy PS'ing!
