Hi all,

I have used Dreamweaver with loyalty for the past couple of years. It is understandable that one becomes very familiar with the software, and therfore it grew on me . I have worked with other editors like Comodo and not so long ago i also gave Zend Studio a shot at impressing me, but it was trails and i could'nt use it long enough to, for example, complete an project on them, so i went back to DW :D .

Every one of them has their strong and weak points, for instance DW is over priced  and Zend Studio has a build-in php framework that i find very usefull.

What do you think, should i stick with DW (which is starting to make me feel inversitile), if not, what do you recommend.

Please comment with disregard to the price of the software.

I also used to use DW Exclusively, but found that it was lacking in certain areas.

I recently started using NetBeans, which is incredibly easy and fast to use. The only drawback is that it doesn't have a design view, which in my case is not a problem, as I have long since done away with it.

Give it a chance, am sure you'll change like i have.

Best of all the price is Right, FREE

Dreamweaver is not a PHP editor, it is an HTML editor for stupid people. Netbeans and Eclipse are genuine PHP IDE's and for serious developers.

I prefer Komodo Edit, you don't need WYSIWYG editing if you're doing proper PHP development. Komodo Edit is free and has everything you need :-) I find Eclipse is very bloated and heavy on resources.

When I was still developing in PHP, I used to code in NuSphere PhpEd. I found it to be fully functional like Zend or Visual Studio in terms of debugging etc.. It just didn't do layout . I used SharePoint Designer 2007 and Dream Weaver to design the look and feel of my templates.

I wouldn't use Dreamweaver for serious PHP development. Personally my favorite is PHPStorm by JetBrains if you want a good commercial IDE. Otherwise be sure to look at Eclipse with PDT and Aptana Studio. Never used Zend Studio but it's also built on Eclipse.

Okay, so i downloaded Netbeans IDE, looks promising so far. Thank you for the replies, i am still going to keep on searching though. I think Zend might be a better option than Netbeans, but marginally.

Okay, so last knight i spent a couple of hours coding on my systems class using Netbeans, It took me a while to get used to it, and i am sure i will get more comfirtable with it as i go, but so far, it is working for me.

Thank you all.

The main thing I would say you can code with any development tool/ app etc as long as you are comfortable with it

I still use note pad ++ occasionally, dreamweaver I never used mostly do development in Visual Studio 2010 for c# and asp.net and netbeans for java/ php

Strange. I bought the Master edition of CS5 two years ago, and enjoy using Dreamweaver as a development tool. Simply for the reason that I paid 20% of the retail price for it and I've used Dreamweaver MX for a long time. I've never been able to use Eclipse, but I might give the others a spin.

Why change? I get that it makes you feel unversatile. But if you know the product so well, you can do better work faster. I agree its good learning a few different developing tools, but if you were to work for a dev company and they are very strict they should allow you to use what you feel comfortable with. I personally use eclipse now. Used to also use dreamweaver but used eclipse for J2EE dev and moved over to it

Agree. Be comfortable with the tools is my rule. But be willing to learn new tools (which a lot of people don't want to do, because it is work).
