PHP7 and local web hosting support

Elitehost also offers 7.0. :)

My bad ;)
Although, just saying, due to their lack of certain technologies (used by Web Crew and Hostking - can someone please point out what these technologies are? WC and HK both just say that...) I can't say I'm impressed by the speed of Elite's hosting at all. Ample has a lot of extra resources (at a price obviously, but more resources is usually worth the extra $$$) as opposed to most other hosts, BUT I have to say that identical sites hosted by them and Web Crew have the same load time even though Web Crew offers slightly less resources. Have never hosted with Afrihost, so I don't know about them - will probably have a client host with them in the near future so I can do some testing :D
Sites I used to host at Elite and migrated to Web Crew loads around 3x faster at Web Crew. Same resources, different technology. I have some sites with Hostking, but performance is about the same as Web Crew's even at the increased price.

Might not be surprised that WC's hosting is faster than Elite's, but it's very difficult to complain about Elite's speeds in general, considering they use CloudLinux/Litespeed. Plus, PHP7 increases speed as well.

That aside, are you testing on a high-demand site? Would be interesting to know if there are speed issues on large sites...

Yep, did the testing using a WP site with woocommerce and a few other (heavy) plugins that e-comm sites would have activated. Also imported around 60 pages of demo content. Elite has more powerful "business" packages that offer cloudlinux x2 resources, but they're expensive and then only does one see comparable speeds to that of WC (and WC is cheap!). Why does it not surprise you that Web Crew is faster than Elite - it surprised me? WC is a fairly new company if I understand correctly (maybe that has to do with it - low density servers due to less clients on more powerful servers?). If it wasn't because a friend of mine works there, I'd have probably not migrated... Well, ok, maybe I would have when everyone started putting up prices due to x-rates, but WC hasn't.

Too bad I can't always test using SSL but I was able to see a significant difference between a site that was initially hosted with Elite and that was migrated to WC with its certificate. WC hardly slowed down at all whereas Elite was around 2 seconds slower with SSL activated. I'd like to know why though. Apparently Elite is moving to SSDs - this will likely shake things up.

That's it exactly. I have some new domains on Elite's CP05 server, and the general consensus is that everything is much faster there (average load is <10%). Other sites hosted on SH01 and SH02 are somewhat slower - this is mostly due to the load, and so sometimes it's not so slow.

I am yet to try out their business packages, so no feedback from me on that front.

WC doesn't seem to show much information about their network. Do they use Teraco? Hetzner? Their only reference to servers is, "Nobody likes downtime – that’s why we utilize some of the most powerful servers in South Africa." (The 'A' DNS record for their own domain points to a Hetzner server, but that doesn't mean their hosting services are all there, too.)

I could be wrong, but I'm sure I heard that EH is working on an SSD cloud infrastructure... As you say, that would shakes things up. ;-)

True, but how long before CP05 is congested also? I'd rather stick to WC where I know that they're committed to keeping density low. In fact, I recently had a discussion with my friend who works there - he said they are planning to offer cloudlinux X2 (double the resources) to all their customers on all their packages within the coming months. That will change things, although I reckon it's overkill. I mean, it's good for us, the end-users (not to mention internet in SA, if more people hosts with them), but it isn't actually necessary for them to invest in that. I'm not complaining though! :D

My friend made reference to the Juniper network - that is Hetnzer right? If so, then they're are probably with Hetzner.

Indeed. Hopefully they're on SSD before that happens! Committed to Elite at the moment, and I doubt that will change unless I launch a large site and have issues. If there are issues, then I'll investigate WC further.

I'm not sure... I thought Juniper was a company...

Yes, Juniper is a company, but Hetzner uses Juniper systems for their network....right? :erm: Don't think the others (teraco and friends) use them. Anyway, I guess it doesn't really matter - WC is fast, websites load like a dream = clients are happy = I'm happy :)

Yeah, here's an article about that.
