Picanto engine lights

Hi eg2505, so I'm new to forums. Not sure if I missed it but what did they fix to solve your starting problem? I have a Kia Rio Auto also won't start just cranks. The engine light and yellow key light does not show when the ignition is turned on. I have had numerous mechanics look at the vehicle and most of them say replace the ECU which is R20k+- but we took the ECU to get checked and they say the ECU is fine? I've even had an old Kia mechanic look at the vehicle without any luck.

I do not have a Kia but I've had a crank+no start issue before that was caused by a faulty oxygen sensor. Everything from ECU to distributor to fuel supply to immobiliser were all fine and suggested to replace over time, but a proper careful check of the OBD2 information showing weird oxygen intake values pointed to a simple sensor issue. These are also a lot cheaper than ECU; so make sure this is checked thoroughly. It took nearly 2 years of intermittent crank and no start issues, with no clear pattern and a lot of mechanics scratching their heads, but the cause was very simple.

So we did a diagnostic. It does not receive any communication from the ecu. So the key can be scanned and numerous other things but not the ecu.

So the ECU is fine but also not scannable? Is this different people doing the diagnostics?

So the mechanic has two diagnostics machines and both say there is no communication to the ecu. Someone suggested we take the ecu to an ecu specialist who scanned the ecu and they say there is no issue with the ecu. We have checked all fuses and relays etc.. No issues there either.

Yeah I'm not well-versed in this stuff, I can only say that issues with sensors can throw no codes but also prevent successful ignition and should be looked at as a possible cause. I assume they've checked that the fuel pump is priming etc, it should be one of the first things to check. Fuel, spark, oxygen before things like ECU. Good luck, hope mechanics don't rip you off or send you on a wild goose chase like I had.

Thank you. I will find out about the fuel and sensors etc...

I hope everyone is not looking at the problem with preconceived ideas that it's the ECU, has anyone bothered to check the basics? Air, fuel and spark?

Exactly. I doubt the ECU in an ancient Picanto does more than control the ignition and fuel injection. It would be so basic that a calculator could do it.
 
I don't know the Kia Rio at all and I can only guess what the problem might be.
If the Kia Rio has a non-interference engine it might be that the timing belt teeth are stripped or the belt broken.
This might be a far-fetched answer but I had the problem with a Golf.
