COMMIT TO USING FEWER PLASTIC BAGS WHEN YOU SHOP!
Cape Town, 03 July 2019: Pick n Pay continues to challenge its customers to refuse the bag and reuse instead. For International Plastic Bag Free Day, the Pick n Pay Waterfront store partnered with the V&A Waterfront to set up three stands at different areas in the mall – near a parking entrance, in the centre and in front of the store – as a reminder to customers to bring a shopping bag in-store and avoid an unnecessary plastic bag purchase.

The stands also sold Pick n Pay’s new budget reusable bag. The green bag is made from two green recycled plastic bottles and at only R5, the bag is an affordable reusable option for shoppers.

“Often customers get to the till point and realise they have left their bag in their car or at home,” says Andre Nel, Pick n Pay’s General Manager for Sustainability. “We want to continue working with our customers to shift this behavior and believe putting reusable bags top of mind can help encourage the adoption of the reuse habit. We should all be encouraged to re-use and recycle whenever possible and are excited to see if these prompts can influence customer behaviour,” says Nel.

Earlier this year Pick n Pay gave away 300 000 reusable PnP shopping bags to customers to encourage the use of reusable bags in-store.

The new R5 reusable bag is expected to roll out to all stores later this year after a successful trial earlier this year.

Pick n Pay trials a R5 reusable bag made from green plastic
...

This first of its kind, this environment-friendly R5 budget bag is made from green recycled plastic bottles, and will initially be introduced in 22 stores across the country to gauge customer reaction.

...

Pick n Pay has also started a trial with a reusable netted fruit and vegetable fresh produce bag (R7,50) in a further effort to discourage unnecessary plastic bag usage.

...

The latest green low-cost reusable carrier bag joins Pick n Pay’s current range of reusable bags. The retailer still has its original Goodness Bag (R12.99) which was launched in 2003. The colourful Township Group 100% RPET Bottle Bag (R20) is not only made from recycled plastic bottles, but R6 from every bag goes to the local female-owned cooperative that manufactures the bag.

...

Last year a unique range of 100% RPET reusable bags were introduced with colorful photographic prints (R25).

Pick n Pay cocked up, seeing the Twitter link it seems that they have only stocked the R25 bag which was supposed to be a unique range,

so I guess that they used the International Plastic Bag Free Day as a unique day to move this year old unique range. Just should have gone with the R5 bag when it was ready to do this promotion.

All they did was to place the onus on their consumers, whilst still making the sale.

Those R5 bags seem to be pretty unavailable. Has anyone seen them in stock?

So personally I think they shouldn’t be selling any plastic bags at all except those thick re-usable woven ones.

What they should be doing is using is biodegradable material bags as freebie ones (it’s not free.. it’s factored into cost). In India I saw this was standard EVERYWHERE including getting takeout. What fascinated me was I bought take out, got a bag, kept it and re-used it without thinking despite the fact that I got it for free.

So yah.. unions and plastic industry can cry all they want but SA should never have allowed continuation of plastic grocery bags as consumer expense as the last decade and a half had shown little difference in consumer use of plastic.. because it was cheap!

SA was one of the the 1st country to introduce plastic legislation in 2003 but unions and plastic industry weakened regulations to what we have now. Looking around I’d say the measures were pathetic and needed to be harder but hey, this is SA and people must’ve gotten paid off..
