Pick n Pay has launched a new pick-up point for Takealot customers at its Table Bay Mall store in Cape Town.

The retailer said that this is part of a pilot to offer customers the convenience of picking up their non-food online orders while shopping for groceries.

They charge for collections from pickup points. Cheaper than courier and more convenient a lot of the time. I don't really have an issue with the cost.

Yep, but they could charge less of course. For example OneDayOnly do a reduced fee for in store pick up at my local Clicks. Costs are R125 to your door, or R55 to Clicks.

If it's not free not many people are going to use the service and I doubt this will be a net 0 cost to PnP and Takealot meaning both parties will most likely lose money.

They charge for collections from pickup points. Cheaper than courier and more convenient a lot of the time. I don't really have an issue with the cost.

The question is scalability though, are there going to enough people using this service to make it worthwhile to do this partnership

For orders more than R500, it would be free. What Takealot needs to do is increase the price of their home deliveries and the threshold for free home delivery. I would bet R200 that if you looked at where the business loses money, it is on home deliveries. Unless you are ordering a large amount of goods, or getting something bulky like a fridge their customers should be picking it up or paying for the convenience.

Hitching a ride on Pick and Pay's logistics would save a colossal amount of money. It means they just need to send a few trucks to Pick and Pay's distribution point every day.

Last mile in the delivery ecosystem is easily the most expensive. If Takealot can get most of their small orders delivered via pickup points, they would swing to profitability very easily.

This is the same reason why Paxi blows away the competition in terms of price, because it is hitching a ride on an extensive logistics network.

Nah bro, I am not going to a mall to pick up my order, ffs. The rather obscurely placed and mostly deserted collection points scattered around is a life safer. I exclusively use collection these days, it's amazing. I imagine a future where all courier companies will have collection points. BLISS!!!!!

Pick ups directly from their warehouses is already R30.
So it won't be any cheaper than that.
