Johannesburg - The government plans to implement a total ban on alcohol consumption by drivers, it was reported on Friday.

An inter-ministerial committee on alcohol and substance abuse, led by social develop minister Bathabile Dlamini, had decided to approach the Cabinet to present a case for zero tolerance of alcohol on the roads, The Sowetan reported.

At the moment, motorists may have up to 0.05ml of alcohol in their blood.

Transport department spokesman Tiyani Rikhotso told the newspaper drivers were continuing to disregard the alcohol limit.

“Medical research has shown that a drop of alcohol (in the blood) leads to (drivers) not being able to control their vehicles.

Most of the accidents are caused by drunk people on our roads.”

He said the department also supported the banning of alcohol advertisement as it made people drink more, and attracted new drinkers.

Social development department spokeswoman Lumka Oliphant said the draft bill would be presented to Cabinet before public comment was sought.

Automobile Association of SA spokesman Gary Ronald told The Sowetan a total ban on alcohol for drivers in Brazil had led to a 30 percent drop in road fatalities and injuries.

I don't agree that " a drop" leads to "not being able to control vehicles", but I am in favour of zero tolerance, zero alcohol. Mainly because people don't know their own limitations.

"Most of the accidents are caused by drunk people on our roads.”

I thought most of the accidents on our roads were involving pedestrians?

EDIT: Wait no that was road deaths

Drunk pedestrians cause accidents too - and they count as drunk people on the road.

Start breathalysing pedestrians!

This will lead to people not attending events anymore. No more going to live rugby or concerts where it is usually associated with drinking

True. But what do you do about other reasons for alcohol being in your body?

And what difference does zero make? Those that already drive over the limit are still going to be over the limit.

Why? Can't enjoy a rugby match or a concert without drugging yourself?

Sad that the few spoil it for the many.

We need safe & usable public transport.

Ja but the guy who has 3 beers and thinks he's under the limit when he's actually impaired will maybe think twice..?
The guy at the braai who is driving home might not have a beer, which would have led to another and another?

Sounds good to me! Let's do it!

99% of the altercations I have had with people on the roads have been with alcohol stinky breaths.

I think it makes sense.
They would need to prove that most of the accidents are occurring for people within that 0.05ml level otherwise this is pointless. If this large number of accidents is occurring in the range of people over the 0.05ml limit then they are already illegal and adding a new law doesn't change that. We already have laws to address those people.

I want to know how many accidents involved drivers that had alcohol in their bloodstream but at concentrations at or below that 0.05ml mark. Right now I just see a bunch of very carefully constructed statements that very much attempt to imply that lots of accidents are occurring under the 0.05ml limit but never is that explicitly stated. Also I want to see the studies that demonstrate that a mere drop of alcohol in your blood impairs your ability to operate a vehicle.

Those people are probably not below the 0.05ml range so this new approach won't address that problem. Those people are likely already legally intoxicated.
