I see more and more places are using this method and should be great I thought at first until today when I returned to Isabella's Brooklyn...

About 2.5 weeks ago I was looking for another place to have decent breakfasts and decided to try Isabella's in Brooklyn. To my delight the coffee was good, the food was great and not even so pricey. My plate which had 2 toasts, scrambled eggs, mushrooms, sweet potato and bacon it was about R50.

Today I went back there for the exact same plate but added a single piece of mini sausage something. Seated? Well I had to be after I saw my plate now magically rang up for R89 instead of the ±R50 I paid the previous time. I then proceeded to ask the waitress "Did your pricing go up? I see the same plate as I had previous time at R50 is now R89", She looked at me funny, took my plate (it was finished) and disappeared.

Nothing of the sort of I am sorry, I will go check, I will find out etc etc. Just funny look and a ninja exist.

So: Plate weighing buffets. Rip Off or does it work?

It's a bloody rip-off. For R89 I can have 2 of those breakfasts at a decent cafeteria.

There is quite a difference between having paid R50 for A,B and C VS R89 for the exact same **** minus that mini sausage.

It's the sweet potato that was stodgier than last time and weighed more! :p

To answer your question: rip-off.

And? You could just stay home and make it yourself.
Problem is when the same plate jumps with R30-R40. Even my SO had exact same plate and hers when from R60 to R80. We ended up paying close to R300 for two for breakfast :erm:.

Sweet potato for breakfast?
Pretty good with cheese. I also thought WTF, but after first bite it was nice.

Do you know how many grams it was the two visits and what they charge?

Ideally they should have a little sign saying "X Rand per g". It sounds to me like they have no obligation whatsoever to keep their price per weight amount fixed. A price jump of R20 is ridiculous and something I'd take up with management either there of afterwards via email. Take photos next time?

Wife and I have a breakfast "out" almost every day...

Am going to try them once retired (doubt if my employer will appreciate the venue!): http://blog.hollywoodbets.net/2014/03/hollywood-breakfast-6am-opening-early.html

I suppose I would have to keep a log book, but even the plate itself with nothing on it was already being charged for: At stage I go up, took an empty plate and placed it on the weighing machine. Clearly when I saw the numbers going by I realized no one reset the scale not to count the plate.... but it did.

Fair enough.

Are you certain the serving sizes - esp of the eggs, potatoes and mushrooms - were identical?

You know... I go out to chill not to be part of the TRC, but seems you have to do this nowadays because everyone is out to get you.

Do I look like Jesus? Of course its not going to be the exact same, but hardly a jump in about double the price I would say is fair. I'll just give them a pass. Problem sovled.
