Wife and I have a breakfast "out" almost every day...

Am going to try them once retired (doubt if my employer will appreciate the venue!): http://blog.hollywoodbets.net/2014/03/hollywood-breakfast-6am-opening-early.html

I see more and more places are using this method and should be great I thought at first until today when I returned to Isabella's Brooklyn...

About 2.5 weeks ago I was looking for another place to have decent breakfasts and decided to try Isabella's in Brooklyn. To my delight the coffee was good, the food was great and not even so pricey. My plate which had 2 toasts, scrambled eggs, mushrooms, sweet potato and bacon it was about R50.

Today I went back there for the exact same plate but added a single piece of mini sausage something. Seated? Well I had to be after I saw my plate now magically rang up for R89 instead of the ±R50 I paid the previous time. I then proceeded to ask the waitress "Did your pricing go up? I see the same plate as I had previous time at R50 is now R89", She looked at me funny, took my plate (it was finished) and disappeared.

Nothing of the sort of I am sorry, I will go check, I will find out etc etc. Just funny look and a ninja exist.

So: Plate weighing buffets. Rip Off or does it work?

LOL, sorry, I'm laughing because I coincidentally know the owner's husband or are acquiantances. When I went, the prices were quite reasonable, but that is a while ago. In any case. So will you go back again? I always shake my head about how these people maintain a business because continue ripping off the customer is not sustainable. If I feel ripped off, I stop going there and spread the word. Word of mouth is incredibly powerful...

On the one hand, I suppose it prevents wastage because you will make sure you don't overfill the plate. But I find the prices of these R/100g places quite steep.

I asked if the system was working or if its a ripp off to see how other people feel about it. No where did I say its an outright ripp off.

Nonetheless I have spoken to the executive manager today and he has taken up the issues with the branch. Which after I have agreed to try it again and see how it goes. This will be on their tab...

Are you sure it was a mini sausage and did you only add one

And the combination of sweet potato and scrambled egg.....was that an accident or on purpose?

I've personally never been inside a Plate weighing buffet, I'm guessing the charge a specific R/100g no matter what type of food is on the plate? If so, then its a ripoff.

It literally was just one, but with that said perhaps I added another slice of potato, one extra particle of egg, bacon... its hard to tell what exactly caused this, this is the whole reason I made the thread. However I'll recheck this grams VS the rands when I revisit.

No accident, sweet potato with cheese is actually good.

Apparently looking at a few places its anything from R15-R18 per 100 gram. I would not know for sure.

Decrease portion sizes and stick to proteins. Easy. Why you would buy a starch at a place like this is weird.

I paid about R120 a week back at Fournos for about 1.2 kg worth of food. Yum...

I'll stick to the traditional hotel buffets...at least there you know how much you are paying upfront!

What kind of plate was it? Paper? Do the scales take the weight of the plate into consideration when weighing your food?
Always thought that you end up paying more at places like that because of the weight of the plate added on.
I have eaten there before and not a big fan after having a omelette that was drowned in oil on the plate.

Lots of places have ridiculous specials.
Just find out.
Pretoria: Barrel and Basket Moreletta: 2 eggs,Bacon, two toast butter and jam: R19.00.
Wimpy usually have crazy specials as well.

Beware: Don't add anything, not coffee or cold drink. It will cost you more than the breakfast.

There's a place outside PE on the way to Grahamstown called "Nanage farm stall"; their buffet breakfasts are awesome and cheap to (cost about R50). Before they weigh your food, they weigh an empty plate and subtract the plate weight from your plate and food weight in front of you.
