playing analogue video through av amp

hi all.

I just bought a yamaha rx-v371 and ar 5.1 speakers. i've connected my dstv decoder to my amp via composite, then the amp connects to the tv via hdmi. However, i get sound but no video. For good measure, I tried the audio return channel feature where I connected the decoder directly to the tv and hoped that it will play through the amp, but all I get it a "buzz" from the speakers. In the end I just connected the video directly to the tv and audio to the amp.

What could be wrong, specifically in the first scenario?

Should work.

On my setup the DSTV goes directly to the tv, but I also have a digital audio cable from the PVR to my AV receiver for the few times I want to listen via my speakers.

Maybe try to connect only the yellow composite video feed to the AVR and use the digital audio output to the AVR?

Make sure the settings on your AVR are correct, I had to play around with the HDMI settings when I first set it up. In my experience HDMI can sometimes be tricky. Maybe it's a DRM issue with DSTV, I vaguely recall something of the sorts - I may be completely wrong though or thinking about something else.

I play a PS3, PS2, Wii, dvd player and Tvix through my AV receiver, which is connected to my tv with HDMI. Obviously all the video input feeds into the AVR aren't HDMI.

Are you using an RX-V371?

The RX-V371 doesn't support re-encoding analog video streams onto the digital HDMI cable iirc...

you would have needed to buy a higher end amp for that. I think the RX-V571 is the lowest end model to support that function.

Tried connecting my xbox360 using the rca audio/video inputs as well with the same results...audio but no video.

Your specific receiver won't do analogue in/HDMI out, i.e. you can't plug a composite (or component for that matter) cable in to your receiver and output the video to your TV via HDMI.

If you're plugging a composite/component cable in to your receiver, then you'll also need to connect the composite/component output on your receiver to a composite/component input on your TV.

That settles that issue. Thanks for the link, OMB. I'm gonna try to connect 2 rca inputs into the amp and one into the tv and see if that works. Anyone wanna place bets? LOL

You could also try something like this, which convert an analog signal to a HDMI signal as input for your amp.
