*deep breath* Calm, happy thoughts...

OK, ADSL line goes down randomly yesterday for no reason. No lightning, no high winds, just some random telkom guy working the streetbox on my corner, but really, it couldn't have been him that done it, really. So anyway, ADSL is dead. DEAD. No phone, no data. DEAD.

I phone Telkom. Normal on-hold-for-10-minutes-at-a-time HORSECRAP... I have to phone the fricking CUSTOMER SERVICE department to get them to phone the ADSL fault-logging department to log the fault!!

Breathe... breathe...

Fault logged. The line test says something is wrong at my end. Is my router plugged in? Oh, the phone line is also dead. Fault logged to the technical department.

I call in the evening. The guy at the other end says that it will take between 3 and 5 days for someone to come out. I say if someone doesn't come out tomorrow (this morning) I'll follow it up.

I follow it up. The guy in the ADSL call center says that due to the current number of faults in my area and the lack of available skilled personell, it will take up to THREE WEEKS for my line to be fixed!! Three weeks... How is this possible? Three weeks? The supervisor spins the same story. Dead fricking end. There is nothing more they can or WILL do.

I phone customer service. I'm desperate. I speak to a woman who sounds like she's about to hang herself by her headset. She almost cries when she sees my fault was only logged YESTERDAY. She sounds geuinely sad when she tells me there's nothing she can do. I should call back in two weeks, if my line is not fixed. OK, a week, she says, feeling sorry for me. It must have been the sobbing.

I would just like to know, if anyone knows, how it is even remote imaginable, even in this telecommunications HELL-HOLE, that it can take three weeks to repair an ADSL line fault?? Does anyone know who I can speak to? Does anyone know how to get hold of Papi and make him send someone out to my house today or at the latest tomorrow, to repair my line...

Send telkom a invoice for loss of income due to lack of service (ADSL line) from their side. :D

Oh, the bastards have already offered me a refund... If only that would actually make me happy! I'd rather be connected!!

telkom faults

Telkom has a very poor fault repair record. I've always used www.hellopeter.com to log a Telkom complaint. The call centre will tell you weeks. On hellopeter you are sure to get a call within a day or two, especially if you have a reference number. they then call the area manager and the problem gets sorted out quicker that if you just called the call centre. First time I used hellopeter was for the adsl installation. After three weeks of waiting, I looged a complaint. Got a call the same day and a techie made and kept an appointment for the next morning. Second time, I logged a complaint after two weeks of waiting got three calls the next morning. The first to say it will be dealt with that day. 20mins later to say that they have assigned a technician. 30 minutes later to say the technie has been dispatched to my house. Called home immediately, the technie was already there. Try www.hellopeter.com. Jayn

Telkom don't think you need a telephone line: they would prefer you to use vodacom. Call it a vodacom promotion!

Had the same problem....after endless phonecalls and trouble shooting, they put me through to one of their supervisors..he didn't do much either... after two months of waiting, It turns out they needed to replace my line to from my house to the nearest whitebox on the poles... scary part is that the previous line was 15 years old!!!

They offered you a refund? consider yourself lucky!

Most people get charged regardless of line status.

As long as you have an open fault, services rendered unusable will be refunded.. well last time i checked. Only prob is account section is always tricksy with it *sigh* but yah by default rental is reduced if line ADSL section was down and was a fault. Unfortunately that does not apply to the isp/user account tho. :/

thats the latest line of BS excuses. "lack of techies, wait 2 to 3 weeks"

I had the same crap at my place (west rand) posted on hello peter, then they called back. 7 days later it was fixed. Already requested a credit for the downtime, last month i got R340 back from em, hopefully same this time.

Sad that we have to go through hellopeter just to get service for what we are paying for in the first place!!

Juice, you can come to our place for some ADSL access if you need to raid etc (veng's house) I'm sure we won't mind. I don't :D

my friends telephone line was discontinued by telkom which had the adsl on it,
for no apparent reason - their business which they ran from their house obviously sufferd losses due to some idiot flicking the wrong switch,
this now over Dec/Jan took them 4 weeks to get the line reactivated....

Update: So, after numerous calls to all sorts of people who cared equally little about my predicament, my wife lets me know that a tech is working on the distribution box atop the pole in our block. According to this... Telkom employee (I couldn't think of a worse thing to call him) he is replacing the box and as a result all the old lines attached to it have been cut...

WTF...

OK, so if I understand this correctly, this... Telkom employee... has purposefully CUT MY LINE, without explanation, warning or apology, to perform general maintenance, forcing me to do the crazy Find-the-Telkom-person-who-cares dance, wasting MY time, to try to get a problem repaired that HE CAUSED, with an estimated turnaround time of 2 to 3 WEEKS!!

So help me, my line better be fixed today...
