512 Latency Is Pants!!!!!!!

im going to LOSE IT! Its been 2 weeks now since my latency shot up to 100ms when pinging games.saix.net! i have a 512 connection and it used to run at a decent 30 ms on all local games.

I phoned telkom and put up with their incompetence for some time, i had to explain what LATENCY meant to the g-damn "technical department" for 2 weeks straight, then they finally sent out a technitian..

nothing, no clue. nada. we tried the connection with his laptop and modem, same thing, 100ms.

Please guys is there anybody who could help?!

oh and ive been redirected to SAIX, ***ked out because im an "end user" and redirected back to those idiots too many times so im not phoning them again. is there any way of fixing it by myself?

Please help

Thank you guys.

oh and yes they have reset my ports and all those things. everything has been tried yet the latency remains pants!

I am based in Vanderbijlpark and had the same problem after each failure at the local exchange. After numerous calls and complaints I was told that the problem was caused by automatic changes in the route table for the local exchange due to the failure. Once the fault was repaired the route table was not automatically reset.

To rectify the technician had to manually reset the route table - this restored my ping times from an avg of 100ms to an avg of 50ms

i think they did reset the rout table here, nothing changed though :(

tell me what do you get when you ping games.saix.net?

what do u get when u ping 165.145.128.1 -t ?

should all be low and consistent pings....if not - i'd recommend a spyware check and virus scan....use something strong - like sunbelt counterspy and bitdefender 10.

cheers

hey Oupa, i get an average ping of 79ms.

no spyware/virus issue, remember like i said ive tried this on two different pc's using two different modems. same line. same problem. :(

Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:

is what i get .......

hmmm

i don't think its your modem - SNR and attenuation doesn't have an effect on this..

this whole scenario makes me think back a while ago when telkom set Error correcting on the DSLAMs when everyone was playing CSS - pings went from 30-40 to 80-100 ms....

maybe its that..
can't remember what it was called.

have u tried switching isp accs like saix/uunet/is?

uunet is a total disaster in the last 2 weeks - local pings are very erratic .
not even speaking about IS :)

lol, np :) how do i change from saix to say..uunet? or w/e

i have an account with telkom isp and another with webafrica. another wierd thing is that pinging international servers, like playing World of warcraft, gives me NORMAL good pings?! damn this is so bloody frustrating :(

well uunet accounts are a bit $$$$ - close to 400p/m for 3gig -
i'd rather suggest to get an IS account say 2gig intl 28 local just for testing purposes... ~130-160 p/m

i can recommend openweb isp for those accs but if u want to have a look at other isps go to www.hellkom.co.za and check the isp directory.

i've played bf2 with an IS account with no problems....

Do a tracert to games.saix.net.Messing around with the PC is not gonna fix things. Its most likely a "hop" aka Router that cauing high ping times.

C:\Documents and Settings\cal.DURBAN>tracert games.saix.net

Tracing route to games.saix.net [198.54.202.4]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

1 <1 ms <1 ms <1 ms 192.168.10.200
2 1 ms <1 ms <1 ms 10.250.251.200
3 12 ms 11 ms 12 ms dsl-145-64-01.telkomadsl.co.za [165.145.

7 37 ms 36 ms 36 ms ctb-cache3-vif1.saix.net [198.54.202.4]

why are you guys complaining of having 100ms, games are still playable, even international games are playabe with a 400ms ping if the netcode for the game is decent
