hey guys, i got a P4 (intel) that keeps freezing ...then when i start up again the alarm goes off (thermal event) ....but here's the weird part : when i take the cpu over to my friends place it works fine 100% without slowing down or freezing or anything .... WTF ???

Any ideas what causing this ? could it possibly be a problem with the keyboard, mouse or something ?? cos at my frinds place all he changed was the keyboard and mouse and it worked fine... please help ...... oh dont think its the room temp cos i put a fan near the cpu to no avail .....

my keyboard has multi media buttons on it ie volume knob etc could it be this ?

the pc just shut off and then when i restart it the alarm comes on (thermal event) it promps me to enter F4 to continue etc then it seem to work fine but after a while it freezes and the problem starts again .... once the alarm goes off it stops soon afterwards and promps F4 to continue and other options i think (i only always enter f3 and continue) ....

Well if your buddy used it successfully with a different keyboard, I suggest you try a new keyboard and see what happens. Is it not maybe your power supply? What is the error message that comes on when it says you need to press F4?

Do you have a display on your motherboard with debug information? If you do, check at which number it stops, and then check in your motherboards manual for the meaning of the code.

Check that your CPU fan is actually turning. It happens that it gets full of dust, and then stops. This also goes for other fans on the system.

just says THERMAL EVENT (overheating or something cant remember the exact error msg) i think im going to try a differrent plug point and maybe a differrent keyboard just to make sure ...

If it's overheating then it won't start up. Make sure your fans are working.

But if it works a buddy's place it can't be his pc.

Lok at what get's changed from what his told us:
Keyoard
Mouse
power plug(because it's a different house.

Maybe the wiring in his house is crap. In which case a ups would be the order of the day.

Ihave seen this errors before.YOu have a oldish motherboard right,Are you running windows 2000 and is your ram ddr 333.
I know what alarm you talking about cause my friends pc does the exact same thing,i remember he had a 775 3.0 ghz p4 with hyperthyroidism:D.

also, you may find that there might be a loose connection some where and when you pick the pc up and move it, it comes right, checking that all connectors are secure and in their good and proper. And ja, I've also had a few problems with a P4 over heating then not booting up and being a bit faulty, also, you might want to check your bios setting s to see what the warning temps are set because that could be a problem as well

Lol, I had a blonde moment. Like we both said, I'd check the keyboard. Also wondering about the power.

You'll probably want to reinstall your operating system when migrating a hard drive between two computers. :)
