I think we need to remove the ID number requirement from the petition - we can use ip logging and email addresses instead. This will hopefully increase volumes, but we need to get the ball rolling again because numbers have fallen.

We are also arranging for t-shirts to be made which I will post more about later...

LATEST SHOCKING NEWS!!!!!!! WE NEED TO PUT A STOP TO THIS - PLEASE FOLLOW THE LINK IN MY SIGNATURE TO SIGN THE PETITION AGAINST THIS!!!

Latest News!! The Sports Ministry claims that the Springbok emblem is their property, and are going to claim royalties from SA Rugby!

In a shocking about turn, the South African sports ministry has laid claim to the Springbok Emblem, stating that SA Rugby has been using the emblem illegally. In what may be seen as the biggest attack yet on SA Rugby and the Springbok emblem, sports minister Makhenkesi Stofile claims that SA Rugby owes the department royalties for the "illegal" use of the emblem.

Former rugby chief Louis Luyt responded that the Springbok emblem was registered as a trademark for Rugby South Africa in 1996, and is therefore not the property of the Department of Sport and Recreation.

It has been registered as a trademark by SARFU in 1996. The Government again has no idea WTF they are talking about :D

I personally know of two people who were keen to show their support but were very reluctant to put their ID numbers online....

The ID number system has become optional now - it is needed if we are to take this any further, however I agree that it was detracting from people willingly signing the petition...

The emblem is trademarked until 2016 so appears safe for now, however government intervention could change that...

Just found an article referring to this. Here it is for those interested in reading about it :

Proof: Saru owns Bok emblem

Saru owns emblem

Johannesburg - The South African Rugby Union (SARU) owns the Springbok emblem and not the South African government, says Dr Owen Dean, partner at intellectual property legal firm Spoor & Fisher.

The firm has instituted an investigation and have found that SA Rugby is the registered owner of the trademark.

Sports minister Makhenkesi Stofile had earlier told the Sports Portfolio Committee that SA Rugby owed it royalties for the use of the Springbok emblem which his department owned.

Stofile maintains SA Rugby have been using the emblem illegally as they have neglected the renewal of its registration.

Spoor and Fisher refute this. "We have checked the Register of Trademarks, and Saru is the current owner of the trademark," says Dean.

"The South African Rugby Football Union (Sarfu) registered the trademark in 1996. Sarfu is now defunct, but one of the two bodies it spawned, Saru and SA Rugby (Pty) Ltd, owns the trademark. We cannot determine which one it is. This trademark was renewed in 2005, and is valid until 2016.

Accordingly, says Dean, he cannot see what rights the South African government has to claim the Springbok emblem as its own, "as prima facie evidence supports Saru's contention that the Springbok emblem belongs to it."

What are they going to do ? Ban all rugby games :D LOL

A study was done by a group of students as to the feasibility of changing the Springbok emblem and name to the Proteas... after an exhaustive study it was concluded that the name would just not work. Photographic evidence for this conclusion was given :

If that is not enough reason then I don't know what is... :)

hehe, good one Lance .........

on a note about the petition, I'm getting feedback from everyone I emailed that they aren't too keen on the id number requirement. Can anyone fix it so this petition can finally start generating some real world numbers?
