hi

i need your help please. i was speeding abt 15km above the speed limit in Howick on the N3 towards Durban. i was caught by the Fixed camera as well as a traffic cop who was trapping less that a km from the fixed camera.

i received a R500 ticket in the mail and the cop gave me a R700 fine.

Do i have to pay for both tickets since
1. it was the same offence ie same area
2. i'm being fine twice for the same offence

i've been to the police station and filled in an appeal form, but each time i call to follow up, they just say no word yet. i dont know what to do and i dont wanna pay for both.

if anyone really knows how to go about this please help thanks

All i can say is: welcome to KZN (i use to live in Durban)

to my understanding you have to pay both.

sometimes they have 3-4 cameras a KM apart. & they will make you pay it as you were caught more than once...

Thats not my understading, I thought there was a limit in distance between cameras that were allowed...in fact, there has to be otherwise you would almost certainly see 300 cameras in a row..

That's not right. And it seems they are deviating from the purpose of speed cameras.

When I lived there I heard many stories of people being caught speeding more than once. & I do believe they would have complied with the law as they have been doing that ever since I could remember(heard folks talk about it even when I was not a legal driver yet)

Think about it logically, there are some cameras where you know people get caught daily, if the gvt could, they would most certainly put a whack load more in a very short space just to make extra money off you.

To be hammered in succession, is punishing you twice for the same crime. I am almost 100% certain there is a distance that needs to be followed between traps/cameras

The government complying with the law

They are normally 1-2km apart, so I suspect the law is perhaps 1km.

If they were not complying with the law then I'm sure there would have been a big stink by now. If I remember correctly from what my parents said this has been happening for about 20years, maybe more.

I've also seen two camera's about 500m apart (in KZN as well).
I think that they know you'll slow down for the first camera, then fly off thinking the next few k's are safe.. Pretty smart for coppers...

Ignore the posted fine if it was not sent via registered mail. * pretend like you never receive it- blame the post office *

If you did sign and acknowledge receipt of the fine presented to you by the traffic cop, then technically you have been issued a summons. Further steps could involved issuing a warrant of arrest if payment is not made.

You could write up to the Head of the Metro police and plead leniency and try and reduce the fine.

the OP mentioned they were less than a 1km apart though, which makes me think it was illegal

I thought about that, but honestly it is difficult to "judge" 1km when traveling at 120km+. Short distances infront of you, sure. so it's possible that they measured it at 1km exact & travelling at that speed it feels like less.

fair enough

Pay the bloody fines, you were guilty, end of story.

When are idiot drivers in SA going to understand that breaking the speed limit is an offence, stop being a bloody baby about it, and pay up!

*yawn* You must be the most boring Subaru fanboi on the planet.

Maybe so, but when I get a fine I pay for the bloody thing instead of crying to the world how damned unfair it is....

If you get busted, you should have the balls to admit that you broke the law, and get on with it.

I do that... I just don't pay the fine... I'll wait for my summons - I think I've received one in the last 22 odd fines... and I check regularly for warrants or summons.

U obviously moaning because u got caught! But u were WRONG!

In fact, if the cop didn't stop u, you probably would have kept on speeding.....maybe he even saved u from more cameras ahead as surely u must have slowed down after that.

SPEED KILLS.....NOW PAY UP!
