Hi all,

I have had an MWeb uncapped account for a number of years, and while it used to work flawlessly with consistent high speeds, over the past few months it has become increasingly problematic.

The main symptom is that a few times per day web-browsing speed crawls to an unusable level (often timing out and failing to load a page at all), and it remains there until I manually restart my router/modem. When these http delays occur they seem to be most prevalent when a new page just begins to load (during the "looking up...", and "connecting to..." phases). Strangely, speed tests (such as the one provided by mybroadband) measure a decent speed even during these phases of slow connectivity.

The slow speeds occur regardless of whether I connect to the router over a wireless or physical connection, and the problem is much more frequent when anyone on our home network is running a bittorrent client. I understand that bittorrent traffic is shaped on my uncapped account and that I must accept slow and intermittent speeds - but right now I am only concerned with why it is negatively effecting other forms of traffic (http, skype etc).

Other symptoms that may or may not be connected with the above are: High downsteam CRC error rates (up to 1 per second), and line connectivity drops that frequently occur at the same time as receiving a telephone call on the voice line.

My internet configuration is as follows:
  • MWeb all-inclusive 4mbps uncapped account
  • TP-Link TD-W8961ND wireless router
  • 2 computers connected with ethernet cables
  • 2 laptops & 2 cell phones connected wirelessly

And things I have already tried:
  • Reloading factory settings on the router
  • Using a free 1gig Afrihost account
  • Using an old MWeb-branded Billion router

None of these have stopped the problem from happening

And finally, some diagnostics of when the problem is happening:

Code:
traceroute to google.co.za (197.84.128.34), 64 hops max, 52 byte packets
 1 192.168.1.1 (192.168.1.1) 1.811 ms 1.277 ms 1.274 ms

Sorry for the long description - but I wanted to supply all the info I could. I would be grateful for any and all advice.

Thanks,
Martin

Sounds like a line problem. What's the line attenuation like? I know in the old billion routers you can see it.

Thanks for your reply dsimonse.

Here is what my TP-Link router status currently says about attenuation and SNR:

Do those numbers look suspect?

Do you hear any audible noises, like static or buzzing, on the line when you make/receive calls?

line connectivity drops that frequently occur at the same time as receiving a telephone call on the voice line

You may have an issue with your physical setup then. Confirm by disconnecting all telephonic devices and inline filters from the line, and then reconnect just the modem before testing again.

If things improve thereafter, start reconnecting the devices back one-at-a-time to sniff out the culprit.

Yep I had the same and then performed this procedure and discovered the culprit.

Not what I had imagined. The Alarm folks had interrupted the cable at a point and hard wired the alarm modem to the feed. No filters or anything. When I found it eventually and added the Adsl filter all was back to normal.

Might help. Filters on all phones?
