Check all the connections to the graphics card and make sure its fitted into the slot properly. also check the connections to your HDD's, there could be a loose connection to the HDD that has your winxp installed and therefore cannot detect a boot device

i checked the fittings all seem fine:(

How big is your PSU? If the gfx card is something hefty, it might mean your PSU isn't giving enough power to all your components i.e your OS HDD.

It sounds like you have somehow disconnected your HDD. If you go into the BIOS setup, do you see all your HDD's?

It's not the card. It must be either the cables are not in the correct place or the bios settings. Recheck that all the cables are in the correct place. Go into your bios and look for boot device priority, then check that your primary boot device is your HDD.

the card is small 256mb .... i even tried the F8 but it just comes up with that error message continuosly but why would it also not work with the old card?

You have to reset your BIOS. On the mobo itself there will be a jumper set. Read your manual on how to reset it. Sometimes swapping gfx cards incorrectly stuffs up your boot procedure. Happened to me once.

how do i do that sorry am still a newby

If you have 2 HD's, check that you didnt by mistake unplug your OS HD and the PC tied to boot from the slave.

If you may have done that, unplug the slave and boot and see what happens.

To check Boot devices - As the PC starts you need to either hit F2 or DEL key to enter the BIOS.

Once in the bios you need to find something with regard to your boot device priority.

It is pretty straight forward. You will see something like. CD-ROM, Hard Drive, Removable devices............Make sure that HARD DRIVE is set to be the first boot device, meaning it will try and find the OS firstly on the Hard drive then check the other devices.

You will be amazed at how PCs work, they have a mind of their own.

Just try that if you have 2 HD's unplug the slave and boot and see what happens. If it doesnt work then just plug it back in and you back to square one and we try something else.

no change

if i look at the 2nd drive i see only 1 red thick wire from there to the board and it has a 4 wire plug i think thats the power cable
the ist drive has the same

Correct. There should be a few spare 4-wire "molex" power cables. Try swap with other ones to see?

Does the graphics card take external power? For some cards, the power provided by the motherboard through the PCI express or AGP slot is not enough. For these, you have to plug extra power cables into the card.
