I came across this posting in another forum:

For most people, crime statistics, when we get them, are exactly just that … statistics & it will never happen to them.
I have taken some of those statistics & put it in a format which they might understand:
If you take the serious crime (i.e. personal injury / death) statistics, for 2004, and estimate what the chances are that any 1 person will be involved in such a crime as a victim, during the course of their lives in SA, it is really scary..
Then, if you then consider that the UN estimates that the crime levels in SA are underreported by the SAPS and are actually substantially higher – say 30%, the chances that you, or your children, (or my daughters) will be hurt or killed, as a result of such crime, is ABSOLUTELY FRIGHTENING.
The percentages below indicate the risk that any person (rape – woman only), will be involved in a serious crime, during the course of their lives
Murder (SAPS stats -) 3.17% (UN Estimate -) 4.12%
Rape (SAPS stats - 16.87% (UN Estimate -) 21.94%
Attempted murder (SAPS stats - ) 4.81% (UN Estimate - 6.26%
Assault with the intent to inflict grievous bodily harm (SAPS stats -) 41.61% (UN Estimate -) 54.10%
Common assault (SAPS stats -) 44.95% (UN Estimate -) 58.44%
Robbery with aggravating circumstances (SAPS stats -) 21.39% (UN Estimate -) 27.80%
Common robbery (SAPS stats -) 19.76% (UN Estimate - ) 25.69%
Total (SAPS stats -) 152.57% (UN Estimate -) 187.37%
For those of you not used to analysing data, this means that, according to the SAPS, the average person in SA will be involved, as a victim in one of these crimes, about 1.5 times in their lives, or 3 out of every 4 people will be a victim twice in their lives and the “lucky” 1 out of 4 will only be a victim once – should we assume that this is the "lucky" person who was a victim of a murder, before he/she was able to be a victim for the 2nd time?
Accoring to the UN estimates, almost every person in SA will be a victim of a serious personal crime, twice in their lives. Or, viewed alternatively, that "lucky" 1 out of 4 people, would probably not have been so lucky.
To really get the message across, according to the SAPS, 1 out of 30 people in SA will die as a result of murder and the UN estimate, 1 out of 25. Now consider only your own & your extended family, say up to your nieces & nephews & parents in law .... about 20 - 30 people???? ...... ONE OF YOU WILL BE MURDERED IF YOU STAY IN SA!!!!!!
Rape ..... according to the SAPS stats, 1 in evey 6 woman will be raped during their lifetime in SA, UN estimate - 1 in every 4½ ...... with my wife & daughters, I have 4 girls that I have to look after, with my mother, it's 5!!!!!!!!!
The really scary part is that things aren’t getting better and the longer we stay in SA, the worse it will get (i.e. the chances of it happening go up, as the crime gets worse).
Also, these are only based on a few selected crimes. According to the 2004 data released, every person in SA will be involved in a "Reportable Crime" at least 4 times in their lives and according to the UN estimate, it is almost 6 times.
Now let somebody try and try and convince me that “things aren’t so bad”!
Also, consider that this is just the crime, which is an absolute extreme. An acceptable quality of life (which is what I want for my girls) extends beyond that, to social interaction between strangers on the street, and which should be based on mutual respect for one another.
The next time someone says, or implies, that you are over reacting to the crime, you can laugh in their face, ..... or maybe you should just pity them, because they clearly don't have a clue, of what is in store for them & their families
