I came across this posting in another forum:

[quote name='JanCpt' date='Sep 28 2007, 10:55 PM' post='50285']

For most people, crime statistics, when we get them, are exactly just that … statistics & it will never happen to them.

I have taken some of those statistics & put it in a format which they might understand:

If you take the serious crime (i.e. personal injury / death) statistics, for 2004, and estimate what the chances are that any 1 person will be involved in such a crime as a victim, during the course of their lives in SA, it is really scary..

Then, if you then consider that the UN estimates that the crime levels in SA are underreported by the SAPS and are actually substantially higher – say 30%, the chances that you, or your children, (or my daughters) will be hurt or killed, as a result of such crime, is ABSOLUTELY FRIGHTENING.

The percentages below indicate the risk that any person (rape – woman only), will be involved in a serious crime, during the course of their lives

Murder (SAPS stats -) 3.17% (UN Estimate -) 4.12%
Rape (SAPS stats - 16.87% (UN Estimate -) 21.94%
Attempted murder (SAPS stats - ) 4.81% (UN Estimate - 6.26%
Assault with the intent to inflict grievous bodily harm (SAPS stats -) 41.61% (UN Estimate -) 54.10%
Common assault (SAPS stats -) 44.95% (UN Estimate -) 58.44%
Robbery with aggravating circumstances (SAPS stats -) 21.39% (UN Estimate -) 27.80%
Common robbery (SAPS stats -) 19.76% (UN Estimate - ) 25.69%

Total (SAPS stats -) 152.57% (UN Estimate -) 187.37%

For those of you not used to analysing data, this means that, according to the SAPS, the average person in SA will be involved, as a victim in one of these crimes, about 1.5 times in their lives, or 3 out of every 4 people will be a victim twice in their lives and the “lucky” 1 out of 4 will only be a victim once – should we assume that this is the "lucky" person who was a victim of a murder, before he/she was able to be a victim for the 2nd time?

Accoring to the UN estimates, almost every person in SA will be a victim of a serious personal crime, twice in their lives. Or, viewed alternatively, that "lucky" 1 out of 4 people, would probably not have been so lucky.

To really get the message across, according to the SAPS, 1 out of 30 people in SA will die as a result of murder and the UN estimate, 1 out of 25. Now consider only your own & your extended family, say up to your nieces & nephews & parents in law .... about 20 - 30 people???? ...... ONE OF YOU WILL BE MURDERED IF YOU STAY IN SA!!!!!!

Rape ..... according to the SAPS stats, 1 in evey 6 woman will be raped during their lifetime in SA, UN estimate - 1 in every 4½ ...... with my wife & daughters, I have 4 girls that I have to look after, with my mother, it's 5!!!!!!!!!

The really scary part is that things aren’t getting better and the longer we stay in SA, the worse it will get (i.e. the chances of it happening go up, as the crime gets worse).

Also, these are only based on a few selected crimes. According to the 2004 data released, every person in SA will be involved in a "Reportable Crime" at least 4 times in their lives and according to the UN estimate, it is almost 6 times.

Now let somebody try and try and convince me that “things aren’t so bad”!

Also, consider that this is just the crime, which is an absolute extreme. An acceptable quality of life (which is what I want for my girls) extends beyond that, to social interaction between strangers on the street, and which should be based on mutual respect for one another.

The next time someone says, or implies, that you are over reacting to the crime, you can laugh in their face, ..... or maybe you should just pity them, because they clearly don't have a clue, of what is in store for them & their families

People will stop moaning when crime reaches 'normal' levels.

You just have to do a survey amongst relatives and friends to see who has been affected by it. Getting robbed seems to be the talk around the dinner table at the moment.

Phew - using those criteria I'm safer here. :)

Be assured - all the pickpockets and professional scam artists from around the world have 2010 marked in their diary already.

my dad got held at gunpoint for his wallet and cell phone like 3 days ago :( sigh

yup, we definitely pessimists just putting the country down.

"Didn't you know that crime happens everywhere in the world?"

Just so there is no confusion, the thread title was sarcasm. As the forumite that I quoted indicates, there is a 187.37% you will be a victim of a very serious crime; "this means that, according to the SAPS, the average person in SA will be involved, as a victim in one of these crimes, about 1.5 times in their lives, or 3 out of every 4 people will be a victim twice in their lives"

He goes on to say, "1 out of 30 people in SA will die as a result of murder."

To me this is seriously scary stuff. the fact that our government is denying that there is a crime problem means that we as a nation cannot even begin to fight this problem -not if we first have to convince our government that there is a problem.

To be a victim of crime only twice in my life? With the biggest threats being assualt, either common or with intent to cause harm. Lets be honest, the assualt thing can happen as a result of getting into a fight, something I have managed to steer clear from, since my Technikon days.

Anyway, just twice in my expected lifetime in the country? Not bad to me. According to the stats that is.

Yeah only as per the cell providers crime here is "billed" by the second where elsewhere it is per Hour or even per Day in comparison, but anyway just like our incompetatent leaders there is many here that just cannot comprehend. f@@ls!

You only need to be murdered once...

You only need to be murdered once...

According to the UN estimates, I stood a 4.12% chance of being murdered in 2004. It's not something I'm gonna loose sleep over. Look at it this way 96% possibility of not being murdered. :D

Seriously though, the most I worry about is robbery, that is why I have insurance. Should I get robbed I would coorperate fully and hence lower my chances of getting shot or getting the crap kicked out of me. At 22% risk, it is just in the back of my mind and not foremost.

Well does this mean that because I have been mugged twice I'm in the clear? NO! ....:(

Now thats where you miss the boat as most murders is committed during the robbery, cooperating or not! Specially if you are white and have females (daughters) with you (Any age) Thats the truth about the situation.

But then again it is not qualifying as murder as it is the a so called botched robbery to skew the statistics.

@Sox63: So if I understand you correctly, because you have not as yet been murdered, it is not something you spend a lot of time worrying about? If so that sort of makes sense!

However your attitude is rather selfish. (please dont be offended by my comment). Just because the crime has not happened to you, does not mean that it is not happening to someone else. And other people are vulnerable and helpless and voiceless. Just because you have not been tied up and robbed of your belongings does not mean that someone else has not suffered the tremendous trauma of such a "relatively mild attack".

So perhaps you could add your voice to help us who have been traumatised, even though you yourself have not been a victim?
