Please suggest a decent PDA/Smart Phone

I've been using the Sony Ericsson P900 for almost 5 years now and the phone is starting to show its age, however, I really enjoyed using the phone because of touch screen and its PDA capabilities. Overall it has been an excellent business companion. It has survived through some major accidents, most of its silver paint has come off, most of the keys on the keypad no longer work, the touch screen has one hard to find hairline scratch, it has been dropped at least 20 times since its purchase and has even fallen to the bottom of a pool. It still works fine, but I'm looking for that "I've got a new phone" feeling.

I was considering the 3G iPhone for its mulitmedia and online capabilities but I've recently been reading about iPhone's developing cracks from normal everyday use. Judging from what my previous phone has been through and the fact that the 3G iPhone is supposedly very weak, I don't think that the iPhone would last a long time if I purchased one. Furthermore, it seems that even though it is a powerful phone that has many features, most people see it more as a fashion statement than a business tool.

I was considering the HTC TyTn II as well, intially it seemed like the perfect choice for me because of its features and the fact that I'm buying the phone is going to be used more for business use than to create a fashion statement, but I've read some reviews/opinions that state that it has a weak processor or some type of hardware flaw that slows down video playback or something along those lines. I am purchasing the phone for business use but I would still like to have the option of using multimedia features.

If anyone is able to suggest a decent phone, or able to convince me that one of the above mentioned phones is worth purchasing please do so in this thread. My main requirements would be that the phone should have similar features to the Sony Ericsson P900 and that it has both 3G and GPS capabilities. I will be buying the phone for cash(prepaid), however, I am willing to spend up to R10 000 on it.

PS. No Nokias please :)
 
I had a bad experience with Nokia some time back. I don't wish to go down that road again.
 
I wouldn't consider the beginning of 2007 to be 6 years ago.

Well you stated you have had your current phone for 5 years so I made the assumption... anyway I hope you find what you are looking for, in the interim i will happily use my N95 for voice navigation, watching movies, listening to MP3s etc etc and explore the seemingly unlimited S60V3 applications and games out there.
 
There some very decent phones on the market at the moment or at least due for imminent release...

Considering your impartiality for SE the Experia X1 would be the logical choice...

This handset would certainly be a very capable replacement for your P900 and it's due shortly, perhaps by September.

I recently had a HTC rep show me around the HTC Diamond and aesthetically this has to be the most stunning piece of hardware on the planet, it retails for around 7k but the lack of a keypad/keyboard of any nature puts me off a bit.

Last but not least the Nokia N96. Now you may not be a fan of Nokia but you would be insane not to consider this beauty. Problem is I don't see much if any noise from Nokia as to when we might expect this honey...

The bottom line when it comes to Nokias is they generally tend to work and work very well, the menus are familiar as they don't deviate much through the model range and their multimedia capabilities normally out perform the so called smart phones or pda's they compete with. On call quality they almost always surpass the Apples, HTC's and Imates of the world. In addition to that I found opening pdf files, words documents or excel spread sheets was easier to initiate on my N95 then on my HTC Tytn II. The processing power of the N95 simply dwarfed whatever the HTC's Qualcomm chipset could come up with. I find the processors on WM handsets are over burdened and the symptom of this is a lag in response something which Nokias overcome with their simplicity..

In any event I really don't think you could go wrong with anyone of the phones recommended above... Happy hunting...

If you loved the P900, then perhaps the W960i wouldn't be a bad bet....If you looking for something different and really awesome take a look at the HTC touch Diamond, I get mine next week...I am not getting a Nokia again simply because I find them a little boring but no doubt they are solid reliable phones....I will keep my N80 for a rainy day :)
 
I'd wait a few months for the Diamond Touch Pro.

No QWERTY keyboard on the W1 and it seems a bit bulkier in comparison to the X1.
But the rest of the specs are sweet.
I'll still be hoping to get my hands on the X1 :)
 
Thanks to everyone that recommended the phones. Looks like I'll be deciding between the following 4 (In no particular order):

1. HTC Diamond touch pro
2. Sony Ericsson X1
3. Sony Ericsson W1
4. Samsung i900
 
Agreed... If you're looking for something "similar to the P900", you can't get much more similar than the SE W960i and SE P1i. They are (hardware-wise) almost the same phones. While this might be nice for you because they will be easy to get used to, etc, it won't offer much (if any) in the way of new features. For that, you could look at the X1, which I understand should still have a similar interface.

The W960i and P1i don't have built-in GPS (P1i comes with a Wayfinder: a bluetooth GPS locator accessory), so immediately that doesn't satisfy your requirements. Unfortunately the only phone that I know of that has this (and does it well) is the Nokia N95.

I have the W960i and have been extremely happy so far. It's an awesome companion, and has been serving me well the last few weeks :D

Hehe, I actually went for the Touch Diamond, which should be arriving at my office in the next 30 minutes :D Going to fake some form of illness so I can go home and play :D

It was a tough choice, almost went for the W960i, but I just couldn’t resist the TouchFlo3D. Hope it is all it is cracked out to be ;)

But considering he has used the P900 with such success, the W960i would be a good bet.

The why is the W1 not on the Sony Ericssons website. Was it only a concept..?

Also for me the X1 is better. I would rather have card slot en better screen resolution than massive internal memory and and better camara.

Tough choice, I personally find Samsung's a nightmare to use, but I haven't tried the Soul, perhaps they have improved. The HSDPA 7.2 also makes it stand out against the Nokia (unless you need Wifi). If a camera is important to you then Samsung is the winner again. I just find the 'touch window' thing a bit silly, either do a full touchscreen or don't bother.

Back to the topic at hand: the W1 doesn't exist, there are now hundreds of SE phones that have gone through the rumor mill and never materialised, and even it it does exist and gets announced tomorrow, it will only appear next year at the earliest.
