yeah but when u dont have a single cpu better than intel's equivelant your pretty screwed

when your being outpriced and out performed how do you survive?

i doubt the amd faithful will stay true to them after the poor quaddies they have released

Intel was in the same boat when AMD were on top.

ya true

The *may* be able to become competitive again if they spend the new money from the germans in an intelligent manner. Lets hope they do.

Either way. We wont see anything decent from them soon.

The Spider platform may already be a failure due to the horrible display drivers and display cards that cant even control their own fan speed to stop it from overheating.

Hell we better check, how many previously Disadvantaged Saffas works there now. BEE candidates galore.

It just sounds so incompetant and normal as per new ZAR standards. Maybe those cards will be stamped "SABS'' to make it acceptable for importing to here!

LOL at least my Radeon HD 3870 reached me in one piece.

But yeah.. there are few things in life that are as adventurous as dealing with a BEE company. The fun never stops.

Ask Intel. Athlon 64 >> Netburst.

Intel didn't have it nearly as bad because they are so much bigger and for some reason a lot of people still bought their chips. Especially the Celeron junk.

had 4 AMD cpu's in the last 5 years & didn't/haven't had any problems with them, would be nice to see AMD pull something out the hat

nah
never

Intels sole business isnt based on desktop processors and even when AMD were on top performance wise they were still probably selling more processors than amd :)

dont forget their server market is huge, mobile phone, pda, laptops (amd never has never had better notebook or server tech than intel)

if intel wanted to kill off amd they could in no time..

that aside im pretty happy with my athlon 64 chip :) next buy will be core 2 duo tho

Er...*cough* Opteron!

AMD has a huge business in flash etc too, not just in PC CPUs.

This is the problem. Up till a while ago, I could get an Athlon 64 X2 cheap-cheap, similar prices to a Celeron; obviously much better value. Now an X2 costs more than a roughly equivalent/faster Intel Pentium Exxxx (actually Core 2 with half-size cache) - that's not good value at all. If AMD isn't as fast as Intel, they need to be cheaper - and they ain't, anymore.

Agreed. Intel makes motherboards too - huge income there. Remember that Intel has so many different product lines, some which are magnificently expensive and profitable (Itanium anyone? yes, they still have clients for those) so the can afford to cut CPU prices to stay competitive with AMD. Yes, AMD has other products too, but nowhere near as many as Intel.

I don't have any links handy, but I remember reading that AMD was outselling Intel in the desktop market before Core 2 Duo was launched.

This is the sad part. Great as the Core 2 architecture is, the current Xeons are still no match for the Opterons. Yes, I know benchmarks show the Xeons are good, but benchmarks only go so far. I tend to put more stock in what I see from my company's 20,000+ servers. When it comes to servers that have to do some serious multitasking, not even the 8-core Xeon servers can keep up and deal with as much load as the 4-core Opterons.

Support AMD is like saying Support a V8 supercar when the oil price is nearly $100 a barel!! :D

Possible, havent seen any Opteron benchmarks recently, but I think the fact that Intel has such a great platform to run those processors on is what kills it for AMD, for which you have to buy third party kit

Intels server platforms are pretty awesome, check out their new modular servers, very nice :)

The Iranians recently revealed a 200+ odd AMD CPU super-computer they assembled.
Well done AMD for supporting WMDs! Maybe its Karma hitting them? :)

Its like asking low plebs like us to buy AMD junk with our hard earned cash while AMD execs can live it up in Monte Carlo on their billion dollar incomes,
maybe THEY should return some of that money and get more R&D going.

Like I said, benchmarks and real world performance are not the same thing. Benchmarks emulate perfect world behaviour, not the stuff real world servers are subjected to.

You're referring to the OEM and DIY market, which isn't the whole market. If you look at brandname servers, the picture changes quite a bit.

Actually, that's not true anymore. Intel's server boards have gotten worse and many of them sell only because of the name on it. Badge engineered Marvel Yukon (cheap ass software based poorly performing) network controllers instead of Intel's own top-quality server NICs, low end SATA/RAID controllers (also with the Intel name stamped on) are just some of the corners they're cutting, and it's the corners most need not to be cut when you're spending server-class money.

They're quality control compared to 5 years ago leaves a lot to be desired too.

Yes true didnt think of the HP's and the Dell's, the picture is very different with them involved. But Intel dominates the OEM side, and a huge share of the branded market too..

Intel's current server boards (5000 series) are quite nice actually.. and if you're going to run an embedded raid controller regardless of the make of board, then suffer the consequences, but atleast the option is there..
