As if that weren't enough of a problem for the company, a disclosure made to the US Securities and Exchange Commission earlier this week formally stated AMD has determined it paid too much for graphics card manufacturer ATI. At the time of last year's acquisition, AMD stated its evaluation of ATI's total value was $5.6 billion. But that included what acquiring companies typically call goodwill, which quite literally is an estimated amount of what the acquirer feels the acquired entity would add to it over and above its assessed capital value.

Please all, support AMD where you can. This post is not about the best platform or the mistakes AMD has made in the past. IMO, they are in serious trouble and if we happen to lose them, Intel will be charging whatever they feel like for processors.
 
I used to like AMD but the bloody thing overheats. I had to buy a R500 cpu fan just to cool it enough (the boxed fan is crap) so there goes the "AMD is cheaper" idea.

My PC runs at about 70 (with this jet cooler) while my wifes Intel PC runs at 30. Hmm, though choice....
 
You make an excellent point ..really you do.
I'd like to help or something however I am kinda stuck as I don't use their stuff. They haven't (for some time) broke any new ground and really have been lagging behind in terms of dual core etc etc.

I remember having an old Athlon one upon a time and it was a real workhorse ..I reckon I ended up using it a good two years after I should have upgraded but it just wouldn't give up! Came with overclocking software etc. and was really all round a delightful experience for me as a consumer.

Its sad if what you are suggesting does actually happen but having said all that - this is how companies go bang, bad acquisitions, general. They just are not succeeding and 'supporting' them is kind of esoteric really.

Maybe they have something up their sleeve that will turn things around?
 
Now that one person mentions it, I used to use AMD, I had a Thunderbird and damn that thing used to overheat alot and then I'd be stuck with this alarm going off.

At that time, I wasn't really earning my own money so I had to use a fan to blow cold air in.

Since then, I've always used Intel.

My one friend is AMD/ATI "mad" - Now he sees this, I wonder what is going through his head because his plan and raving was he could upgrade his CPU etc for years too come.

What if AMD isn't around in a year?! haha. :)

Weird. What CPU is it? The stock fans on every Athlon and Duron upward have been perfectly capable.
 
What about the 'enviroment' its in?

I mean, when I had my AMD, Cape Town wasn't exactly hot all the time, my alarm would go off all the time, even on days when its cold and raining so its def the chip / cooler.

But, these days, in CPT is hot alot and i mean ALOT so I can only imagine how hot the aMD CPUs get now...

If I imagine what my Thunderbird alarm was doing THEN, I don't even wanna imagine NOW! haha.
 
Its pretty hard to support AMD when they release crap :(

I used to be an AMD fan(until Thursday) so I recently bought a brand new HD 3870 and its obvious that they released this thing without thinking or doing any sort of proper testing.

The drivers are crap and the card bios/drivers cant even adjust the fan to run a little faster. The card idles on about 70 deg and goes up to 104 deg under load while the fan is running on its lowest speed. Forcing the fan higher with riva tuner helps but googling the issue shows that its a common issue on these cards. No attempt at a fix from amd/ati yet..
 
Yep I too am/was a big amd supporter. (root for the underdog, rah rah boom sha sha, etc)
My current PC is an AMD and it's still running quite well. Performs just as well as alot of the earlier dual cores i've worked on. (but then I keep my system clean and defragged)
But it looks like my next upgrade is going to be an intel. :o
Can't live on 1 core and HT for ever
 
AMD are suffering because they can't compete toe to toe with Intel. It's a fair market, and Intel's products at the moment are just too exceptional compared to AMD's. Sorry but my money goes where the quality is.
 
I'm still using my AMD 64 2ghz for 3 years now, runs at 30-40 C idle, 45 -50C on load thanks to my thermaltake silent tower heatpipe, love it :) but I'm changing to quad core soon because I buy what is best at the time...

I bought my AMD because it was superior to anything Intel had in the same price range at the time, now Intel CPU's are superior so I'll be going with them till AMD kicks butt again hopefully.

My PC is still running with a Venice 3200 939 CPU and a Radeon X800 and I am still quite happy.
The only game I play now and then is a bit of Counterstrike Source Online and my current set-up works flawlessly, so why should I upgrade.

The trouble is AMD would need to sell Millions more CPU's and Graphics Cards in order to remain profitable. Customers like myself would need to upgrade and many have, but with Intel Chips as once the Core 2 Duo's hit the market over a year ago it changed the whole landscape back into Intel's favour, which was angling towards AMD at the time.

Perhaps my next set-up might still be AMD. By this time next year I might upgrade and if AMD has what it takes then, I may buy their products.

AMD will be kept alive to ensure that there is some sort of competition. If they die not many people will be able to afford decent intel hardware. Intel will be able to do the same as Telkom and dont think that they will care about their precious fans then.. its all about the money :cool:

Fortunately ze germans gave AMD a few hundred million to keep floating over there.
 
yeah but when u dont have a single cpu better than intel's equivelant your pretty screwed

when your being outpriced and out performed how do you survive?

i doubt the amd faithful will stay true to them after the poor quaddies they have released
