Can those have done this please walk me through getting an importers/exporters code, I can't decipher what the requirements are for an individual. I want to get both the importers and exporters code at the same time.
I know this subject has popped up from time to time but the ones I could find didn't really explain much other than directing to the SARS website. I'll update the op once it's all said and done to explain exactly what steps need to be taken.

Here's the SARS pages:

What is the procedure to register as an importer?

If you are a prospective importer you must complete forms DA185and DA185.4A1 and forward them to the relevant Customs Offices where a Customs and Excise client code will be allocated to you.

The documents that must accompany the application are:
  • Proof of address i.e. your municipal water and electricity account.
  • Certified copy of your identity document
Certified copies of the following documents:
  • VAT, IT, PAYE, SDL, UIF letters from SARS to confirm revenue registration details;
  • Resolution/consent or other authority as applicable;
  • Telkom and/or cellphone account older than 3 months to confirm contact details.

One of the following to prove bank details:
  • A legible certified copy or original bank statement which confirms the account holder's name.

Account number and branch code;
  • An original letter from the bank on a letterhead; or
  • An original auto bank statement.

You must be older than 18 years and have a permanent address in the RSA.

Is the above required for a personal application?

Account number and branch code;
  • An original letter from the bank on a letterhead; or
  • An original auto bank statement.
Why would they require 2 bank sets of statements and what bank statement are they actually looking for here, must it be printed by the bank branch?

What a schlep....30 years ago I walked into Pta office, in 20 minutes my new company was registered and had an import/export number. No docs needed and still use that number today...

I don't have any of those in my name, so what other proof of address options do I have?

A municipal account from whoever owns the property with a certified letter from them confirming that you live there should cover it.

Email these guys, I have delt with them before, they cost a bit, but they send you a list of docs, and check everything and stand in the Sars que.

Worth it in my opinion.
I need both an importers and exporters code, I thought the only difference between the 2 is just a tick in a box yet they charge an extra R1000 for both?
"Import License or Export License @ only R1450 within 1-week. Or get both for R2450"

For R2500 I'll do it myself!

Yea I could have done it myself, but when dealing with deadlines, work, sitting in Sars que for 3 hours only to get told docs are wrong. Sitting in traffic again at 7am to stand in Sars que, billable hours to client was a better bet. It gets more complicated if you need ITAC permits as well. I have learnt the hard way, sometimes it's just easier to let a professional do it.

Used tradelogistics.co.za
Around 1800 for import and export, pain free experience. Well worth it if you don't have the time to spend in queues

Getting told I have the incorrect documents is why I started this thread, I want to go to SARS once and once only..

Does the address on your bank statement need to match your physical address?
My bank address is still on an old address, they don't mail anything so it's become largely irrelevant.

I have only one suggestion. Go to SARS with the required documents (phone them for confirmation first) and do it all there. Sorted.

You think they will answer the phone in the first place and then I will be able to speak to someone that knows what they are talking about in regards to these applications??
I think not..

CRA01 form for residential address if it doesn't have your name on it..

You will need the owner of the address to sign with certified copy of their ID.

Everytime I see a SADC article in a Newspaper saying that soon we will see a freetrade bloc with open borders in Southern Africa, I give a wry smile, if anything SARS have made cross border more difficult and I cannot see them relinquishing control of this process...

We use a clearing agent to register us as an importer/exporter and to handle all our importation issues, renewable every year.......

Anyone have any ideas on the above?
