Hey guys. So recently got a new lenovo. Installed plex on it but seem to be having a problem with my plex streaming to laika on samsung tv.

Everything streams besides mkv's.

On my previous laptop I remember I came across something similar where I had to go into the plex directory and add/change something.

Not sure if this is the same thing...
Any suggestions? When I click to play a mkv, the screen is blank, no sound, timer doesnt run.. I can see the bottom banner, but nothing plays.

Any help would be appreciated.

Are you running the latest version of Plex for Samsung from the Samsung apps store? Laika was the the name of the pre-official version?

I dont have to do anything special to view mkvs on my 2011 D6000 or 2012 E550 TVs.

I prefer laika as it doesnt buffer as much in comparison. Not sure whybit would buffer in first place as laika buffers nothing at all. I'll test the new version now

tried it out, still nothing. using latest PMC on pc, and downloaded latest on from samsung smart hub :/

I'm almost certain the issue is your network path between PMS & TV is not capable to transferring data at the necessary speed/consistency required.

You need to go through a process of elimination to check if each component along the path is working properly (inc PMS NIC driver).

But its wired? And has always worked tops... just when it gets to those files it buggers out.

Let me also try on plex forums, ive scanned already - but will make a post

Thats no guarantee its providing the required throughput. It just takes one auto-neg mismatch between two ports to induce enough errors (e.g. CRC) to disrupt the ability to sustain high-speed acknowledged TCP transfers (which Plex requires).

I been through this type of troubleshooting with Plex enough times to know it always turns out to be the networking.

Solution was buffer size on the official plex release , as laika didnt offer that option. Seems to be ok now

You shouldn't need to increase the buffer size, I dont need to even for my largest 1080p mkvs e.g. 15GB.

Its an indication data is not being pumped into the TV fast enough.

The only difference I notice is between laika and the official app. Items which buffer is only on official app. Laika buffers nothing, no long load times, no judder nothing

Ok so I just downloaded plex and it seems that I can only use a browser and not a windows app. This is my first time with this thing so i want to know, is there a desktop app for this? The actual app wants to stream video and there is no option to play the stuff off my local drive.

Ok i got it now, the channel directory crashed whenever I accessed it, i reinstalled and now it is working.

There is a plex desktop client too. The thing that opens in the browser is the server app and can play stuff too, but if you want a media center experience on your pc itself, look into the plex client.

So to reiterate, there are 2 plex apps, seperate installs. Plex Server and Plex Client.

I am now at this point where I am struggling to add my local media to this app...There is a "TV Shows" tab, I would like to rename that to Series, and would like to add another tab named Movies. Is that possible?

If you open the media manager in the browser, on top is "My Library" . On the right you will see "+" and "pencil" to edit. First you need to add either Tv Shows or Movies (in terms of videos). You have to specify this, as Plex will treat it different (i.e. looking up episode guides and such). Once it's added you can then click the "pencil" to rename it. It will still be classified as "tv shows" or "movies".

So if you store your movies in the same place as your series, you'll need to make 2 sections. The TV Shows section will only pick up tv shows and ignore any other videos. The Movie section will pick up all movies and any video that is not recognized as a tv show.

Yes, very easy.

1. In the web console, click on the plus sign (Add Section) under the My Library section.
2. Click TV Shows.
3. In the Name field type whatever you want to call it.
4. Click Add Folder and select the location of the media files.
5. Click Save.

Then you just have to wait a little bit as it scrapes your media and downloads the necessary info off the internet. This could take quite long depending on how much media you have.

No, you always need the Plex Server, it's the main thing that streams and indexes everything. The Desktop app is just a "viewer". If you have 5 other PCs/Ipads then THEY don't need the server (browser app) as they can all connect the same server. But you will need at least ONE server running.

There is no "browser" version. The browser version you are referring to is the Plex Media Server and is required for anything to work, you cannot do anything without it.

Wow that is quite sad that the app can't do something as simple as that. Anyway, Plex, XBMC or Mediaportal? what do you guys prefer?
