Plex: The best software ever

I only have a 10mb uncapped adsl line :/ My put.io can stream HD without issues. Its clear and smooth.... but yeah, some of the other services could definitely do with a higher speed line.

Ffs, I hope they bring VDSL to EL soon :/

Holding thumbs for you, it is awesome :D

I preferred it on my tablet - but prefer XBMC on a TV

+1 to this.

Plex is great, even as only running as an App - but XBMC on a HTPC is much better.
With an iPad, XBMC is very slow... Plex rules here.

Lol, I'm on the Takealot page now deciding whether I should buy one. Should I?

It's expensive compared to the US pricing but still cheaper than most other media players.

EDIT: Nevermind, I went and bought one. Had R50 off voucher so only ended up costing R569 and I'm going to that part of town tomorrow so will collect :)

Will give feedback once I have it set up.

so after playing around with xbmc this is my take

ITS NOT FOR ME: flippen difficlt to set up, when i finally did i dont see an option of viewing the channels on my roku. I do not want to use the PS, i definately DO NOT want to view TV on my laptop. So i will stick with Netlix, Hulu+ both on my Roku 3

You mean Plex? XBMC doesn't work with the Roku.

I have a chromecast running hulu, netflix and hbo go. The thing that annoys me is that because of unotelly, for some reason I have to first start programs on the phone and then enable chromecast, it's not really seamless but I guess it's just knit picking on my part. Youtube however doesn't ever have this problem, and i'm sure plex won't either.

Currently i'm running an openelec htpc and a rasperry pi. The thing I now have to consider is if I move to the chromecast/plex setup i'll have to get a stronger server as I only have a Hp microserver N36l. Will plex handle hd content well enough on the chromecast, and if so how big would the server need to be to transcode 2 full hd streams. To me plex seems to be more feature rich and development seems to be moving faster then xbmc, my only gripe is running an i7/xeon server seems a bit overkill.

With regards to the chromecast, i'm sure we'll still see big things to come from google and the android community, I'd buy it just for the sake of being able to fiddle with all the new crap.

Cool, already found a solution for this: http://forum.pfsense.org/index.php?topic=65878.msg358821#msg358821

I'll just do that on my pfSense box.

Picked my Chromecast up this morning. :)

So far the Chromecast works well with everything I tried, Netflix, Hulu, Youtube, casting tabs is cool because I can now stream cricket to the TV from almost any site.

Plex is a bit iffy still, given that it is still very new I can understand. A lot of my content has to be fully transcoded (not just audio) and when it does the quality is not all that great (mostly 1080p). Stuff that doesn't need transcoding works well. Also, when casting from the web app the video just seems to get stuck a few minutes in but casting from Android works fine.

Firstly Plex is based on XBMC.

Secondly Plex makes more sense and is much easier to use in a Multi-TV / Multi-client environment.

1. Transcoding. If you have an iOS device that isn't jailbroken to run XBMC natively then Plex is the way to go, at least until XBMC eventually supports transcoding.

2. Central Watched/Unwatched status with Pause/Resume from any client. Yes XBMC can technically do this as well but is a massive pain in the ass with MySQL servers and configuration changes etc.

On the flip side Plex isn't nearly as customizable as XBMC and is much more of an Out-the-box solution.

I am actually switching from and OpenELEC/XBMC setup to a full Plex setup this weekend so have been doing plenty of testing. The pros far out weight the cons for my particular needs with 2 TV's and 2 iPads in the house.

What did it ultimately cost you after shipping and customs?

And where did you buy from?
