Plex: The best software ever

After some fiddling and Googling I found that the Chromecast could be a great device for Plex but, your media must be in a certain format. Transcoding works well at the moment but it will transcode 1080p down to 720p if you don't have your media encoded just right.

The best settings for your media should be:

Container: mp4
Video Codec: h264
Audio Codec: AAC (You can also just create a separate AAC stereo track in addition to multichannel track like AC3)
Must be optimised for streaming
h264 level: Keep at 4.1 and below.

These settings will probably ensure your media plays back on almost all devices without transcoding and will allow you to stream 1080p to the Chromecast.

Is there a benefit to having a Chromecast/Roku/Whatever if you have a Smart TV that can run Plex?

Sometimes, depends what TV you have. The Roku is nice because it really is very quick and responsive, sometimes the smart TV apps can be a bit slow. Also the Roku probably has a bigger variety of apps than most smart TVs.

The Chromecast is a different story, it's designed specifically to be a device to push content from your PC/Smart Phone/Tablet to the TV. It's trying to compete with Airplay and while it's not really as easy to use as Airplay it doesn't require the device you're casting from to actually send any data except the first command to get the stream, once it has the stream URL it does everything onboard the Chromecast (unlike Airplay which requires the device to actually send all the data).

I think it will take some getting used to as I am very used to operating a remote, so I don't think it will replace my Roku just yet.

I've recently done a fresh installation of plex however after the initial scan it refuses to update the metadata of new shows…

I had a similar problem. I deleted the library and after setting it up again, it was okay.

Love plex, just want it for the 360, have it running on my ipads and even phone....my LG dvd player also picks it up, but not in the same format as the other devices.

Done that so many times not I've lost count.

After a bit of digging I see the metadata has been downloaded - for some reason Plex isnt displaying it though.

Did you delete it from the app or from the folder in /AppData/

Bwana sounds like you might have some or other permissions issue.
It's possible but I've repaired them as well.

As per plex's website I deleted the following folders:
~/Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server/
~/Library/Caches/PlexMediaServer/
~/Library/Preferences/com.plexapp.plexmediaserver.plist

As well as the app.

Metadata not stored stored locally though, so if Plex installed it should be able to write metadata.

Bwana is the internet connection working okay on your Plex machine?

Yeah I know in theory that's the case but I've had a nightmare of a time with permissions where I also made the assumption that the folder itself doesnt need to be writable.
