Plugg Uncapped ADSL Feedback

if you downloading from 5pm you probably on 1 star, hence your speeds.

download from 11pm till 06am

AFAIK the star rating is meaningless after 5pm as it becomes unshaped then and only applies between 8am-5pm.

So, if you have slow speeds after 5pm, then I would suspect telkom.

unshaped? yes. Meaningless? no.

Even when you download on the weekend during their offpeak and unshaped time, it still effects your star rating.

I remember Janitor clearly telling us this a while back. Its in the thread, good luck finding it though ;)

What I meant was that it doesn't matter whether you on 1 star or 5, your experience will be the same after 5pm, (and weekends).

its holidays... every teenager is at home downloading steam specials and hd pron

lol.. make sense actually :D

edit: I did phone Telkom (port reset did nothing). Phoned PLugg helpline, guy said exchange near Menlyn was stuffed (not sure, I'm 15km away from Menlyn).

But will see how it goes till Feb.

I could always see my NZB won't download during day (due to star rating). But after 5pm it flies/flew no hassels. I can accept that. But having wobbling download speeds (and almost no speed) after 5pm sucks . The wobbling speed is not consistent though...

My experience is that I get full speed as the clock strikes 5pm, on anything, no wobbling ever.

I would have left long ago if my after hours performance suffered in any way.

If I was you, I would blame telkom.

I will give it time and then make a move. The dual connection is awesome ... so will bite the bullet and see.

Edit: Yea.. I blame Telkom. I had my line down more this year or 2.. than in the past 7 years.

I don't make use of the concurrent connection, so if the story comes back that IS resellers are identical in every way to Plugg accounts (barring connections), then I will move to the cheapest, which will obviously be bad news for IS consumer (Plugg), and will make them look like they don't really want to have any customers.

I've just been looking at connection.co.za (wrong thread, but on purpose to light a fire under Plugg's arse) and at those prices, esp the 10mb, motivates me to go and blow up my exchange so I can get off 4mb :)

Not all IS based accounts offer 2 concurrent connections. It is the more expensive IS accounts that do, the cheapers usually only allow 1 concurrent connection.

Also not all IS resellers are 100% identical. The resellers depending on their size, can make small changes to the accounts and how fast the star levels drop. The cheaper accounts stars drop faster, slower on the more expensive accounts.

So with that said, you can figure out how the IS based account will work, its based on stars, price affect how fast teh stars drop down or go up depending on your usage. It is still variable, but the formula changes based on the price.

Most do offer 2 connections.... The R99 account from connection does allow 2 connections. The 10Mbps account for R499 works awesome with one 10Mbps and one 4Mbps adsl line connected to it.... I'm sharing it with a friend and it works amazing..... My new favourite adsl account...

I agree with your logic, that's what I suspected when one compares resellers to plugg.

I would still like plugg to confirm whether there are differences with the star rating rule set when comparing resellers to plugg. On second thought, they could say anything and one would just have to take their word for it as there is no way to prove it, other than being an ISP slut and moving around trying the others for oneself, as in, does the star rating behave differently with the others when one compares like for like, hence my question to Janitor above.

eg: webafrica thread being much more active than plugg's (an active thread is a bad sign, no news is good news), or maybe it's just because they have more customers to complain, as they have more attractive pricing, who knows?

To sum up, we are not talking about how many concurrent connections but only star rating behaviour with the others (not OW )

Still don't like the 30 day policy with for example Webafrica, although they have a much better client zone (but that is not enough for me to make the move), don't know about the rest what their policies are (please exclude OW).

@ cavedog

How long have you been using the connection account? Has it been longer than 10 days, and if so, assuming you haven't changed your DL habits, has their star rating behaved any different?

Also, what is their cancellation policy?

Thanks,

Cheers :)

EDIT:
If all is comparable to plugg, then I would like to know from Janitor what incentive there is to stay here? I mean, why should IS care, they still get our money anyway at the end of the day.

EDIT2:
Are you able to see your star rating with connection?

wingnut771, the star rating on all IS accounts work pretty much the same. The only difference is, is how fast the stars go down per gig you download on the account. Think of it as a multiplier. The less you pay for the account, the the higher this multiplier is, to faster mark you as a heavy users, which means it takes less gigs to get into 1 star.

That said, pretty much all IS accounts are unshaped after hours, which is great on all of them, so as long as you don't need the account during business hours, the cheaper accounts are just as good as the more expensive ones. If you need business hours dsl, go for the more expensive business classified accounts, where the stars fall much much slower.

As for Openweb accounts, they do say they don't make use of the star rating system, however in truth they are bound to that exact same system. What you will find however is, their gold accounts are the more expensive accounts, and usually that ISP have the heavy downloaders, who won't really complain about day time shaping on 1 star, because they pretty much know how much they download is abusive.

I would just like Janitor to confirm this, as, although I agree with you, I don't know where you getting your info from.

One can go from 4 to 1 stars in 1 day with Plugg, if you are naughty and take advantage of an unshaped weekend for example, then you suffer for the next week. One shudders to think then how quick the others drop, as I float around 2-4 stars by keeping DL's at night and streaming after 5pm.

As it stands now, even on 4 stars, NNTP and P2P (about 60k) are pretty much dead during the day lately anyway on Plugg, when, looking back, I remember getting full speed on plugg.news during the day if I wanted something for whatever reason, ie: freedom, which is good evidence that their IPC bandwidth has reached capacity, and either haven't planned ahead properly, or just trying to recoup some profits.

I'm eagerly waiting for cavedog's response, as R430 - R260 = R170 saving is very tempting.

Looking forward to next month when my 4mb will end up costing what a 2mb used to. Include the discount on top of that and there will be quite a radical drop overall.

.

Yip.. I remember being uber happy with PLugg, could download during day and speed would be great. Now it's only from 5pm...

Why would you need NNTP during the anyways?

I wouldn't, but good NNTP performance reflects a healthy network.

Not always hey Telkom works great with usenet 24/7 fullspeed if you are shaped or not but p2p with them is DEAD 24/7...

I had the R99 account since they launched it. I did about 160GB for a month and the start rating was actually 4 stars on the last day of the month.

I took the 10Mbps account yesterday and I share it with a friend. 1 x 10Mbps adsl line and 1 x 4Mbps adsl line and from 6pm last night until now we have done a total of 43GB and its currently only on 4 stars. So we lost only 1 star. That is to be expected cause its a 10Mbps account so the average usage would be higher. I will let you know once we hit 1 star cause we are pushing it to see what the limits are and the shaping is during the day on the different stars...

Yes you can see the star rating by logging in @ connection.co.za
