Police get GPS systems

Radio listeners have donated more than 700 GPS systems to help the police respond faster to emergencies.

The appeal put out by Talk Radio 702's John Robbie came after a request from an SAPS flying squad member who told of how he was hampered in finding addresses, thereby delaying his response time.

Garmin gave 30 systems while companies and the public added 700 to be given to flying squad members and other patrol officers in Pretoria and Johannesburg. - Staff Reporter

why should citizens have to give this to police?

I dont really see the point TBH. They should have it already...
Do we have to give them guns aswell?

Let just hope they (the GPS units) stay in the cars and don't end up on the pawn shop shelfs.

Or in the station commanders SUV

Same thought crossed my mind. Most of those units will probably NOT end up in police vehicles.

People/companies donating money to make the Police more effective is great. This shows that there is a lot of goodwill in this country - and people are willing to help fight crime. Great stuff!

There are a lot of folks that will be willing to help, I count myself in...
But the help very rarely reaches the intended party in SA.

Go and ask how many of these GPS's are actually in the cars ?

yes, but the other way of looking at the situation is, why should citizens have to provide the police with equipment? it's pathetic. government should provide this.

yes lets not give them these gps sytems and wait along tim for them to respond when we could help out and help each other out

i mean these guys do their lives on the line for next to no money

merc the government is suppose 2, BUT HAVE THEY?

its like breaking a glass you can be upset about it for months but the glass is still broken

same thing applies to government, they may not provide and should BUT THEY DONT

donating to the police will only encourage government to do buggerall, cos citizens are doing their job, using their own money and resources to fulfil a commitment that government has failed to do. it's not the citizen's responsibility to provide resources to the police.

yes but not donating wont help either

so we should not support the poor and let them starve because the government wont do it?

i think not my friend

your logic needs rethinking

when your government fails you, as a country you should stick together and help each other because if nobody is helping the country will go to crap overnight

you're taking things out of context. we're not talking about the poor here. we're talking about the lack of resources that the police has. feeding the poor is not the same as giving GPS systems to the police.

Helping is always a good thing, donating, making an effort etc.
If I had money, I'd also have donated a few GPS systems.
If communities come together, crime will drop!
Simple fact, if we work together, we can do anything.

this is all of course assuming that they will use the equipment. i get the feeling that the police are rather laidback and not motivated to do their job. if anything, they should be paid more and given the required resources. yeah it's good when citizens help out, but we're talking about 700 GPS systems that citizens had to give away, cos government has failed. if we continue this, we are basically telling government that it is ok for them to do nothing.

I agree - its great to see the people getting behind the police.

I think this is a brilliant gesture.

To the rest of you, you'll bitch and moan if police don't arrive at a crime scene quickly and finally when the community pitch in and donate 700+ GPS units to help alleviate slow response times then that's a problem too.

Why do the police need GPS units? They should know their beats like the back of their hands. They work there everyday after all. I say, require the cops to be more observant and patrol the areas they are supposed to protect.

*Maybe even get out of the station and/or car every once in a while!

when i heard this on the radio yesterday and today i honestly expected this type of general response on myadsl.

Gr8 gesture from the public!
