Police needs software help with crime fighting

Why should the SAPS be bothered installing software to fight crime when they show little regard to actually doing anything about crime itself!.

I'm with LabAnimal here, perhaps priority should be applied to providing an incentive to perform to the police, before throwing software at the problem.

Software only helps when the people doing repetitive manual tasks are overloaded.

EDIT: Okay, software can also help a lot with information collaboration. But, I don't know what systems the police have already that are probably not being utilised properly.

I would prefer emphasis on more staff and faster court processes, and helluva improved response times.

sophisticated software requires sophisticated users. Do the police have enough of those? If not, then it's better that they do not waste time and money on what will be a failed installation.

I have to agree, but I feel the problem is that this deal makes no one rich. Watch this space for the next BEE deal. The problem is that whoever motivates for it from within the SAPS has to be sufficiently high up to make some money and gain some notoriety. They just haven't identified that person yet. It was already stated that SSG does not sell the system itself.

Why don't they install the hardware and software at the Jhb Zoo for the animals! - They will actually get results compared to human use!

Ok wow the quality of articles is low on this site :(
"often those databases are not linked or the software cannot interrogate data stored in a separate places."

I think it should be "in separate places" and not "in a separate places".
And I'm guessing here but it should not be "interrogate" but rather "integrate". That would make more sense but I could be wrong. That is just a random sentence that I took. Seriously...just get someone to read it for you before you post the news.

"in separate places"
would appear to be correct, as would "interrogate" which is a term commonly used when extracting data from a database.

The same BEE mentality in charge of telkom - icasa - health - muispalitys - is in charge of the SAPS - I hear that they are concidering banning call centers and revert back to bushdrums...

What's the point in having the software when half the police can't use a computer, let alone write. They'd probably steal the computers and sell them for extra cash

:D LMFAO!

I wish they software cud work so they can find the FUC#$ers who poisoned my dog..

“Why on earth do the top law enforcement agencies in the world use this and the SAPS doesn’t?”

SSG does not sell the system itself so it has nothing to gain financially if the police installed it, Graaff said.

Eish, vigot ze 2 problims:
1. No incentive (aka the bribe is not big enuf) and
2. Vigot not enuf brains to understand what zat softsistem does!!

That only handles vechicle licences & fines.

Yeah I know. Look what a mess that is for what we would regard as simple data.

Would expect the police to require fingerprint db's and all hosts of complicated software.
So think that's going to happen when simple things like Enatis can't be implemented properly?

Well then Business Day made a mistake by printing "in a separate places"...I just copied and pasted from the article. I said I was uncertain about interrogate.

The police is part of the crime problem. They assist the criminals. Forget about them, the article describes what is known as Behavior analysis. All we need for this to work on a SA wide scale is Unlimited Bandwidth. The real criminals are the people colluding with the Telco's in forbidding us from using 1.7, 1.4Ghz for community Wimax.

=== Automated image analysis of CCTV ===
:Image processing -
http://www.military.com/features/0,15240,162614,00.html?wh=wh describes how video analytic software stops crime in streets by using AI to detect out of the ordinary behavior. Both the [[SecurityCompanyScams]] and [[NaspersProblem]] don't want [[UnlimitedBandwidth]]. With it communities will be able to setup their own [[CctvCameras]] networks. Behavior analysis are done on the streamed CCTV footage using ImageProcessing software stored at a central location with strict control over the servers so as to protect the intellectual property of the software. South-Africa can negotiate a nation wide license from these ImageProcessing companies such as IBM. The flash video from http://www.aimetis.com/Aira which shows how automated analysis replaces CCTV operators, the weakest link in surveillance systems. The Gautrain is a multi billion rand effort by government to improve economic growth. By the same logic the government should use it's vast purchasing power to partner with mines, industry and communities to implement ImageProcessing and automated threat recognition - [[UavInTheNews]].

Analytics are the future of CCTV systems and turn cameras into intelligent sensors. The Enterprise Version of E-AIMETIS has over 10 built-in 'Smart' analytic algorithms. These provide the CCTV system with automated functionality to detect certain anamolies. The user is able to configure each channel individually with rules. The rule might be a direction of traffic or an alarm zone or a trip wire. Other algorithm's in the suite included left object detection or loitering. All of these are extremely helpful as a tool to alert a security officer who may be monitoring 200 or 300 cameras. The intelligence allows the CCTV system to think for the officer and act accordingly. Resulting actions may be PTZ camera tracking, hardware alarm activation or an email to a supervisor.

=== Place PC/camera in street ===
Place [[CctvCameras]] connected to an [[EmbeddedPc]] on each street corner. Use behavior analysis software on each PC to
detect any suspicious behavior. An image snapshot is sent back to the base using [[GpsAndGprs]], [[MeshNetworking]] or [[RadioModems]]. This is an alternative to deploying a [[TelephoneNetworkRollout]] to stream high bandwidth images back to a central base with a single PC analyzing the footage. The cost of the image analysis software will constrain what can be done.

All Memex has to do is develop a plugin for dividing bribes up correctly and ensuring they are paid on time then SAPS will be sold on the software! :D

And when the computers get stolen ? .. besides no more competent people are accepted into the police force
