For decades the preserve of the rich and famous, the iconic Porsche sportscar may soon be available as a more affordable model, according to a senior executive at the German car maker.

The priority for the crisis-hit company is to produce a car significantly cheaper than the current "bottom-of-the-range" model, the Porsche Boxster, which costs 46,506 euros (67,778 dollars), Wolfgang Duerheimer, head of development, told Automobilwoche magazine.

Deeper co-operation with Volkswagen, Europe's biggest car maker, which in August announced a merger with Porsche, will make it possible to reduce costs, he said in an interview to appear on Monday.

Last month, Porsche said that sales had slumped by 24 percent in the financial year to July 31 but expressed optimism that the worst of the crisis was now in the rear-view mirror.

Stupid move...
VW should just buy them out.

I hate the Boxster!

i've been telling people that for half a decade. porsche should build smaaallll little cars with 2 litre engines in it. turbo or supercharged of course.... i know you need a 6 cyllinder engine to get the propper porsche exhaust sound, but hey, wouldnt it be nice to drive in a focus / corolla / cruze or maybe even a mini ranged porsche. a panamera in small... brilliant!!!

I agree!! Like a GTi, S3 killer!!!:)

there goes the value of my car :( ....

I'll give you R10.55 and a candy for it. :D

I've been saying the same as well. Porsche should make something to compete with the MX-5 and the like, without being too bloody girly. I don't need to be able to do 300km/h but I would like a sportscar that is fun to drive and beautiful to look at.
At the moment, if I had the cash, I'd buy a secondhand Cayman - wouldn't even consider a different car and I'd use it as a daily drive.

the cayman is a really nice little car

This man speaks the truth. R550k picks you up a really nice one, which isn't so bad I reckon. I wonder what maintenance is like on them. Fortunately the R550k includes a 5 year plan.

The cayman S is a well balanced awesome little car ... yes it comes with a 5 year motor plan or 100 000km ... it must be noted brakes, and clutch are considered wear and tear items, so if you really abuse these components, Porsche wont replace them ... of course if they break for no logical reason they will be replaced

If you buy one second hand not through Porsche, there is no mplan! ... before you could pay R20 000 for an mplan transfer, not any more ... Porsche will say "sorry your car no longer has an mplan"

awesome little cars ... mid-mounted engine fun :)
