Remember the days when porn dialers would dial an expensive long-distance number on your PC, and land you with a sky-high telephone bill?

Those dialers have been resuscitated, and will be targeting mobile phones.

As per The Register :

After taking a long hiatus, trojan dialers that can rack up thousands of dollars in charges are back by popular demand.

According to researchers at CA Security's malware analysis lab, a new wave of malicious dialers is hitting users of mobile phones. The trojans are built on the Java 2 Micro Edition programming language and cause infected handsets to send SMS messages to high-cost numbers, at great expense to the victim.

So, cellphone users, beware lest ye sit with a biggie-best cellphone bill...

Cellphone reps : how will the cellular companies react to this sort of thing, and what measures can be put into place to protect the consumer?

They will do exactly what they do about current SMS/MMS spam: Rake in loads of cash at the expense of their hostages, er, customers.

Expect them to make it as easy as possible for the spammers to make money and as hard as possible for the end user to defend themselves.
