Porn domain delay

Its not censorship. The content is still there.

Its just going to make it easier to either seek out or avoid.

And I thought that the people reading this board have more than 3 brain cells:

1. Forcing pr0n sites to the .xxx is nothing but an atempt of censorship.

2. Adult sites on .xxx will stop spammers from flooding our kids' emails with adult images - FALSE!!!!

Spammers don't care whose email they send to, that's why they'll continue mass mailing no matter what. Spammers buy, use, and discard domain names in a matter of days. They'll continue building adult sites on .coms, because the .xxx will be much easier to filter.

3. Forcing adult sites to the .xxx tld will protect our children from accidentally accessing adult sites - FALSE!!!

You get porn pedlers that abide by the rules, but you'll get thousands and thousands and thousands that'll do anything for a buck, meaning that if it is more profitable to have an adult site on a .com instead of .xxx (since many ISPs etc will filter the .xxxs) many people will continue building their sites on .coms (by hosting overseas etc).

Well, I don't donwload pr0n 24/7 but I reserve the right to do so whenever I feel like it, and since about 90% of men watch pr0n online I consider myself 100% perfectly normal.

And follwoing the 'pro .xxx' people's logic, consider this:

a) nobody has ever died from overdose of pr0n

b) millions of people have been killed in the name of God, Allah etc, therefore I demand all the churches. mosks, and sinagoges be moved to Pretoria West, so I can easily avoid them.

Sounds stupid, doesn't it? Well, actually I'm perfectly fine with having churches in my suburb, beacuse I can live with people having different views and believes, can you?

Why cant you partake in a debate without being openly sarcastic and hostile from the get go?

Just cos you wont be able to view pron at work if this scenario were true, no need to take it out on us.

Like I said before. The big, professional pron/adult site would most likely welcome this (if they got to keep their domain name) Spammers and amatuers who abuse the system give them a bad name.

Well they wouldnt be able to continue building sites on anything but xxx if it were enforced and being much easier to filter is the whole point of our hypothesis.

Erm, it would. At the very least it would help alot.

I run my own business, and I can view pr0n any time I want to.

The big, professional pron/adult sites are 100% AGAINST this, I can assure you, I visit webmasters' boards on a daily basis and this is discussed there quite often.

No, it wouldn't. And once it starts where will it end? Then we'll have to move orgish.com type of sites to .horror and so on and so fort.

Yes, the only problem I have with adult sites is that children should not be accidentally exposed to them, but I firmly belive that it's 99% the parent's responsibility that that does not happen. Because so many people freak out when this happens but how many of them have NetNanny or something similar installed on their kids' PCs?

Well....

my problem is this...
if you start categorising the system that isnt categorised and wasnt meant to be categorised then you create "opportunities" that didnt exist.

vis: 1mb, unshaped, 3gb cap + access to .xxx for only R5k a month.

give it enough time, and they will have basic internet access with .co.za thrown in, and you will pay to access .com, .co.uk, .org etc.

the way it is now almost prevents that perverse marketing scheme from happening. the net was designed by techies, and that is what we have now. If you let the suits redesign it, everything will cost $$$ more.

It's all market driven not so? Demand vs supply. I think porn users are just worried that they will have to register for these services and can't do it all anonymously. Also, no free porn at the office? Who knows all the reasons. That aside, I think the pro's outweigh the cons. I am quite prepared to argue this point with someone who has their own teenagers (or younger) using the web. Otherwise I say you have no idea of the issues at stake. Spam aside. Why are porn users so neurotic about the issue. Typing xxx into your browser instead of com is not quite like having to go to Pretoria West for your church service. This is not a geographical problem or solution... It just gives people CHOICE.

I do have a problem with people who think that we should have to install bloatware and additional software (which is less than perfect) to protect our kids. It should be a choice. Like watching TV - I would like to know that by not signing up for a service, I am not going to have to constantly worry about my kids coming across it. I don't see why I should be penalised cos someone else doesn't want to enter xxx into their browser. Most porn sites already charge for their service right? So why the fuss?

It's hardly a discrimination issue.

I am interested to hear your views on children who are willingly exposed to them (out of curiosity for example?) Do we do nothing, or should we protect them for their own good?

Well, you can start by telling your kids (as soon as they're old enough) that sex is something good and wonderful as oposed to sex being something filthy (as it seems most people here believe).

And even now there're plenty of software programs that filter inappropriate content, use them. I'm sure none of them is 100% bullet proof, but I firmly believe that nothing can by solved be censorship either.
