Port 443 shaped - not by ISP

Hi,

I was wondering if anybody could offer some insight into my problem.

I'm running a PC, recently reinstalled with windows 7 Home Premium. Comodo Internet Security 2013 Pro. I connect to my router via wifi. The router is Dlink DSL-2750u. I updated the firmware yesterday. I've got a 10Mbit/s ADSL circuit that has been tested by telkom and is working well with low noise, high sync rate.

My problem is that I am restoring data from Crashplan.com because my hard drive crashed ~ 800GB. This connection is me --> 50.93.246.62:443. This connection / port is shaped at 2Mbits/s. It never ever goes above that and usually sits at 1.9mbit/s

My ADSL line and ISP was with Axxess. I switched to openweb after I found out that Axxess has been managing my line speed for an indefined period of time without telling me and without being able to provide any reason for the shaping.

At Openweb I signed up for their "game's bling..." account which gives you shaped / managed bandwidth after hours / weekend and whatever they can manage during peak hours. I've been really happy with them because I've been able to get full line speed for all the updates / software I needed to reinstall.

However this crashplan.com connection shaped at 2Mbit/s.

I've contacted openweb and they have been very helpful. They've moved my account around, closed and openned it, assigned a different account, etc to no effect.
I've contacted telkom to no effect
I've contacted crashplan to no effect - they are not shaping the bandwidth.

I've attached the tracert below.

Please could somebody advise / provide insight into why this particular connection / port is shaped and if there's a way around it?

Have you checked the settings inside the Crashplan software? Their FAQ says they limit CPU and network usage by default to not impact your PC when you're using it.
 
The CPU use shouldn't affect the bandwidth, but I've changed it so that it doesn't lower CPU use when user is present. The network throttling is disabled. I've changed TCP packet QoS to throughput from normal.

None of this has allowed the speed to cross the 2Mbps point
 
Port 443 is also used for VPNs running SSTP.

Though OpenWeb say otherwise, a number of ISPs shape port 443 on [large] downloads simply because they believe that it is being used for P2P/torrents.

Though it shouldn't affect the port, I'd also test with Comodo disabled.

BTW how are you finding Crashplan ? How long did it take you to perform your initial upload ? Would you recommend ?

I'm considering signing up for Crashplan ...

Yep, they all shape SSL because they can't see the traffic.

Can you change the port ?
 
Are you by any chance just using a single connection to do the file transfer? If so, then that would be the reason why you're only getting 2Mbps, due to the latency and TCP window size.

I'd recommend that you use at least 6 concurrent connections if you want to transfer files fast from overseas.
 
I have noticed recently that Mweb is shaping port 443.

I use a UK vpn for work and have seen a dramatic change in the speed. Time to look at Afrihost I guess

On a different note, I cannot get Netflix to go above 1.5Mbit/s, so maybe we are having similar issues on our 10Mbit lines.
 
I'm with Openweb and probably 90% of my web activity is over SSL on port 443. Haven't noticed any issues.

Capped accounts are generally not shaped- it's normally only the uncapped accounts that are shaped.

Changing the subject: would you recommend CrashPlan ?
 
Sorry can't help. My openweb account is only giving me 0.6Mbps at the moment. Have contacted Openweb to resolve.

Thanks for all the advise. I have contacted Crashplan support to ask about multiple connection and changing the port. It's definitely just a single connection from localhost --> crashplan:443.

Despite the 2Mbit/s speed issue I'm having now I'm really happy with it. I pay month to month. It took pretty long to back up everything, but I was only on a 4Mbit/s line at that stage. Now I've got 1.2TB of data stored safely. I keeps every version of everything. It's saved tremendous grief quite a few times.
 
Can you perhaps open the application multiple times or multiple sessions and then download multiple files simultaneously? That way you should also be able to fully utilize your 10Mbps line.

I also had this kind of speed issue initially with my office's 10Mbps NeoBroadband Fibre connection, until we realized that the issue was due to a single connection and the latency.

I think the multiple connections will give you better throughput than the single one.
If you can give it a go pleas report the results back here.

Thank you also for the feedback on Crashplan. I am sure we have all regretted not having a backup somewhere and if it is affordable then more people will shed fewer tears.

Just done some tests with Crashplan. In the same boat, upload of only 500kb/s (max is 1024kb/s) and download of only 800kb/s (max is 10 800kb/s). Not sure where the bottle neck is lying. Got a funny feeling my ADSL modem is on the brink.

I suspect that this is shaping on port 443 (SSL). I'm experiencing the same speeds using 2 different usenet providers on a 10MB Openweb IS account. Problem is, I'm getting this even after hours, which should not be the case. Also, the standard port 119 is already throttled to hell, maxing 1mb if you are lucky. IS never used to shape port 443, but I am convinced they are now. :mad:

NB: As we discovered when WA moved to IS, IS deems 'after-hours' as between midnight and 6am, seven days a week ...

Expect shaping between 06h00 and 24h00 ... <sigh>
 
I installed a virtualbox with a version of ubuntu to try to get paralleled downloads. The Ubuntu connection is getting much hire speeds than the windows version. Very strange.... The idea was get setup a few parallel machines to download multiple connections, but it's strange that the version being run in a virtualised environment is going faster than in the native windows host.
 
Here is where it gets weird. I configured SABNZBD for only port 443 to Astraweb, speeds are around 8Mbit/s constaint flat line. But on Netflix and Crashplan, speeds are below 1Mbit/s.
