Ok, so I've given up hope of solving this one on my own. No matter what I do I can't get port forwarding to work.

I have a TP-Link TD-8840T modem.
I also have a separate WiFi router, but I've disconnected it to remove it from the equation.
I've set up a static IP for my PC.
I've set up port forwarding to that IP under virtual servers in the modem's interface.
I've contacted my ISP (Afrihost) to make sure they are not blocking any ports.
I've tried connecting to the port through my external IP and through a dynamic DNS service (No-IP).
My DNS settings for my WAN interface are manually set because I use a proxy server. (Doubt this would influence it?)

My method of checking involves using sites such as http://www.canyouseeme.org/ and ping.eu.
I have found that port 80 is open on my connection but nothing else.

So I have no idea where to go from here . Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the reply. Yes I have and I have configured my set up according to those guides

Are the external and the internal ports different?
I have had a router in the past that would only forward identical internal/external port pairs and NOT differing ports (eg. I like to have ssh forwards where external port 22xx would forward to internal IP x port 22, this didn't work with that particular router). At the time, I was not able to find any indication that the particular router had this limitation. I think this was a netgear router though, but your particular TP-Link one might have the same issue.

What are you port forwarding ? Only time I done it was for running a gaming server. And it was pretty straight forward on a similar router (also TP-Link). I did however have problems initially with NAT loopback, but got fixed with a firmware upgrade.

This modem doesn't have different options for internal and external ports like some other ones do. Unless I am looking in the wrong place?

@ irBosOtter: Nope, I've disabled the Windows firewall and the firewall on the modem
@ Dan C: Yeah, it's for a game server. I will see if there is a firmware update available

I've made that mistake too and a lot of the times I tested here I wasn't running the server. It's running now, configuration is set up right and I've updated the firmware. Still can't get through. :(

Dont you need to add an acl in the firewall section to allow connections to that port?

Damn :(

Did you make your internal IP static ? Mine is running from an hp micro server which I set to 192.168.1.109

Then port forward looks like this..

Can you telnet to that port from another pc on your lan using the internal ip of the game server?

Thanks for the support so far guys...

The firewall on my modem has always been disabled and is set to allow all packets.

@Dan C: Yes, my pc's IP has been set to static with the port forwarding set to that IP adress.

Ok, the problem seems to be with the game. I just started the minecraft server and opened the 25565 port for it and I was able to get a confirmed open port. Bloody hell. Sorry for the trouble, looks like my problem lies elsewhere. Thanks for all the help though.

Glad you got sorted.. Happy gaming :)

Common problem I find is that sometimes the PC/device on the inside does not have the default gateway set. Sounds simple but maybe check that.

If that's the case then the pc on the inside would not be able to access the net at all

In case anyone stumbles upon this looking for troubleshooting ideas this is what went wrong:
The game (Factorio) uses UDP instead of TCP. I suspect most port checking sites use TCP and as such the port reported as closed. A UDP port checker reported it as open.
The client couldn't connect to my server even though the port was actually open because of a game version mismatch. :wtf: Derp.

Thanks to everyone for trying to help.
