Possible base station sites - input required from forumites

Good day all,

In an effort to expand our coverage footprint, we are requesting your assistance in recommending / offering up possible base station sites for use by Neotel.

The following information is required when submitting recommendations:

  • Site name
  • Site address
  • Site type (i.e. rooftop, greenfield, school etc)
  • Longitude & Latitude co-ordinates
  • Site contact details (name and contact number)

To begin with we require sites in the following areas:

Gauteng region:
  • Bedfordview
  • Halfway House/Gardens / Midrand
  • Carlswarld
  • Erand Gardens
  • Bryanston
  • Randburg
  • Fourways

Cape Town region:
  • Wynberg
  • Cape Town CBD

Your assistance is appreciated.

Please consider this area. This is a strategic location and would provide coverage to Illovo, Sandton, Athol, Hyde Park and most probably Melrose as well depending on tower coverage. These are all prominent Northern Suburbs and I'm certain Neotel could acquire a fair chunk of the market here if it were covered.

lol? St. Davids? I went there. Is there seriously a tower on the property? Hiding in one of the floodlights maybe?

Looking on google earth for a good place in Bryanston. If all else fails I'm willing for you guys to stick one on my roof :D
 
I had a look on google earth. Turns out my house is pretty high up so signal distribution would be great.

There are a few potentials in Bryanston that I can think of:

Bryanpark Shopping Centre:

There is a complex here. Don't know contact details, but if you send a bakkie out and ring the manager's bell, maybe you'll get something:

Longitude: 27.9906°E


Or my house. Here are some photos on the roof. Take a look. If there were to be a tower on my roof it would cover most of Bryanston, including part of Olivedale, Bryanston Country Club and the west side of Sandton too.

Disa Towers in Cape Town is a good spot, looks over the whole of Cape Town pretty much (or at least the CBD)

Camps Bay High School in Camps bay also looks over that entire area.
 
Neotel is dead to me until they move into the other 95% of South Africa.

MMmm Perhaps MTN / Vodacom / Telkom would consider selling you a copy of their Geo-Spatial base-station DB :confused:

Good place to start.

Why not employ a Professional GIS company :confused:

Someone that can use modern technology including Ortho-Rectified Satellite imagery with DEMS and the advanced features as offered by eg. ESRI products.

PLUS one of those special software packages specifically for analysing wireless coverage.

They could do the whole of SA with co-ords / LOS / Owner details ( from the census data ) -- really whatever you want to know. (All from their Head Office )

They could put together 3D models and even "fly-throughs"


AAhhh Wait a MO -- Perhaps these guys send in an invoice at the end of the Month :rolleyes:


But wait -- you could hire hundreds of the unemployed -- give them some basic GPS training and send them out to pin-point all of the existing base stations.

NO-One can stop you from standing next to anybodies base station mast and taking a reading.

Build up your OWN base station map that way. Write off your costs to some Gov employment program -- VOILA -- you have your base station map for FREE


REALLY bad pre-planning on the part of your company :(

how about the new shopping centre going up on rivonia road, near Redhill school.

I could do with a Neotel tower a few hundred meters from me ;)

Also Gdiza, the three towers is not a really a good spot as half of the reception area would be all over devils peak and the rest of TMNP....a good area would have coverage to potential customers all around it.

...but i can see how you would like one there....being about 50m from a site would be awesome :D

I see you guys have new offices in Midrand.
Are there plans to put a tower on your roof?
 
I have a good site in Westmead/Mahogany Ridge in Pinetown. Will let you put a base station up for reasonable monthly income.

Hurlingham, Sandton

Not sure where the tower would go, but there is a dead spot at the coords below. Our area can't get Telkom (5.2km to the exchange), iBurst is spotty and Vodacom coverage is unreliable. Would being right under a tower still allow good coverage? What is the range of a tower, because a tower at Bryanston Shopping Centre, as suggested above, might cover this area.

There are a couple of fields in the nearby area.

Er, not going to publish my phone number, but the municipality would probably be the contact people given it would have to go in one of their fields.

Alternatively, Rosebank Union Church, cnr William Nicol and St. Andrews may accomodate a tower.
 
What about the Garsfontein/Wapadrand area? Would it be a possibility? The whole area between Garsfontein and Wapadrand's got no connection, the closest being either Lynwood Glen's or Waterkloof Glen's bases. There is a few good spots. Either the primary school Hoerskool Garsfontein or shopping centers Atterbury Valuemart or the huge Pick & Pay. Also a good spot could be the hill along Lynwood road. Also would have posted the Longitude & Latitude co-ordinates but don't know how to get them.

Can people not read? I see none of the information requested by the Neotel rep. All I see is "what about this site?". Read the requirements before posting crap.
