Post Office increases prices

That doesn't sound right
https://www.postoffice.co.za/Tools/Postalrates.pdf
Page 17 has rates, medium letters international are under R50, normal letters are probably the small one at R15. Once you add stuff like tracking etc. Is where you'll see higher prices.

You might have to pay the +130 for all the registered stuff, but it's definitely not 700.

i told the moron behind the counter that we just wanted to send a normal letter and this what she said yes its R732 and got her supervisor to come calculate it - i repeated for a normal letter of the type that in the 70s and 80s when i was in school that needed a 20 cent stamp and was told with a sneer well its R732 now (or whatever the price she initially told me) .... it seems like they have utter cants working there and this is why they are so farked

i really will not be surprised if that ar5e thought that these old charou farts will be easy to steal from and proceeded on that assumption ..... all it did was make an ass of her because no charou that i know will pay that much to send a letter - i have couriered Hi-Fi subwoofers weighing around 20 kilos+ for that amount from Durban to Gauteng

So what will the new handling fee be for incoming international parcels? (Because that is the only fee they they would ever possibly receive from me.)

Aarto does
Because that is guaranteed to arrive well past the payment deadline, so they can charge you interest on the fines, and make a massive profit on this, effectively trebling the fine amount for basically no action on their side. Hell even municipalities do not send via snail mail, because they get so many irate customers complaining about getting bills months later, or not at all.

I haven't used or received anything from the Post office in over two decades, I don't care what government mandates, the Post Office will never deliver anything for me again. I must say that I'm sure the three people still using the Post Office must be devastated by the increase though.

The BRP guys must be thick af, considering this rule was never enforced and no one uses the PO any more in any case.
So why even spend any resources fighting this, they must be absolutely clueless?!!

“On 12 December 2025, Honourable Minister Solly Malatsi issued a directive, which was gazetted, amending the Postal Services Act to remove the reserved postal services category for parcels under 1kg,” they said.

“This will effectively eliminate Sapo’s exclusivity on small parcels and is expected to negatively affect SAPO’s future postal and courier operations.”

The business rescue practitioners said they will engage with Icasa regarding Minister Malatsi’s December 2025 directive."

I think the last time I ventured into a post office was in the 80s. Must be a very small percentage of people who actually need to use the SA Post Office in this digital age, only those needing stamps and to utilise snail mail.

The BRP guys NEED that rule in place, because their plan hinges on the Post Office making a profit from it by forcing everyone else to pay them licensing fees.

Its gone now though, and I think legally it would be a challenge for Solly to re-instate it anyway since it lapsed and the Post Office hasn't met their own licensing conditions for many many years.

Their entire rescue plan rested on the PO having a monopoly on most e-commerce. It says a lot about the viability of the Post Office. The department should demand their money back.

So what did you do before email or before everyone accepted it?

Feck the Post office. Couldn't even get my replacement Stanley lid from them and Stanley eventually discontinued it. Had to send it to the local distributor at my own costs and they're going to replace it. Feck the Post office and feck the ANC and feck MyBB for this article.
Lol they send a notification today the lid arrived on 27 Feb already. Awesometools already replaced the whole Stanley cup and delivered it. Useless Post Office.

My Mom was an avid stamp collector. She was part of a world-wide group that exchanged stamps. She also collected first-day stamps (I think it is what it is called?) and gave me and my brother complete sets spanning many years. The post cards I sent her from all over the world were treasured. She was quite shocked to receive post cards I sent from Moscow and Leningrad! (Sorry Mom, but if I told you we were going there you'd be PANICKING!)
Receiving parcels from grandparents were such a TREAT - my kids had the privelege, but is was via courier.
I guess it's a blessing she's not around to see how her hobby has just been obliterated. I still miss her though...

The Post Office before it went tits up was a great option for local shipping, it was cheap, relatively fast and a good alternative to using a courier. It was pretty much like we use The Courier Guy Pudo lockers today.
