I am still waiting for an item from overseas which was posted on 12th September...when I track it, it only shows dispatch number
Customs probably has it or it was stolen.

First hand experience with the top class postal service in Korea and the very honest people there, I'm damn sure the parcel is in the clutches of a low life thief in SA.
I've given up on the people in JNB.

Phone Martie 011 - 961 6030 and give her the tracking and dispatch number - expect them to shift blame like they did in my case.
You can probably have the sender declare it LOST and claim compensation.
Expect SAPO to send you a slip in the next few months to confirm
that you didn't receive the item. You'll need to send the slip back.
The claim for the $130 SMS fee and $300 for the contents was made about two weeks ago - I need to contact the folks in Korea to get an update on the status.
Sitting with the same problem here! The problem is as follows - when a parcel leaves South Africa - the tracking nr change. And when a parcel enters SA it chane - so the nr tht you receie from our local Postal Service is only valid in that country.
So how can you trace it?!
How do I know what my local SAPO depot is?To get the new number, you must call CUSTOMS, call your
local SAPO depot (CapeMail in CPT) and ask for Customs
How do I know what my local SAPO depot is?

@ Justgadgets
First,do you send it via EMS(at the post office) or normal international parcel.
EMS parcel - trackingno stays the same and can be tracked with destination country's tracking service.
Not EMS - do the same as Sarine but ask for the intl trackingno.
NO NEED TO CALL CUSTOMS OR "YOUR LOCAL DEPOT'.
Same number, just ask for the intl tracking detail.I just swopped the names it seems.
depends where you sent the parcel to.
If you sent it to the usa then just go to www.usps.com
you can input the sa number they dont change it.

SAPO is also connected to a worldwide network. They cannot track the parcel (intl) for you but CAN GIVE YOU THE TRACKINGNO of the parcel that goes out SA.The parcel gets its international tracking no here before it leaves.
When a parcel left say USPS for SA,the moment it left USA that parcel gets logged with its usa no on our system, they just waiting for it.
Parcels sent from SA,if it gets a overseas registered or speedpost number then yes you can track it with about 40 countries systems.
