Power crisis enters new phase

And yet the Big Boys of eskom management still receive their incentive bonuses every year. Too sad...

How about they start by cutting off those people who don't pay their bills?

Dunno know about that. We do have a certain amount of responsibility to help Africa develop. (Arican Rennaissance etc). "Those who have the power to change the situation, also have the responsibility to do so."

I just think it's bullsh*t that a service provider of a basic human need (albeit indirectly), should still pay its exec's top salaries for a badly managed business.

And don't anyone start about "unforseen repairs" and blah blah blah... I work in a similair industry and there are departments within them solely dedicated to ensuring that the operations continue unabated, unforseen repairs or not.

Sure but that's the problem. We quite literally don't have the power.

I must say, my favourite was that "Power Meter" on TV during the load shedding...

The US has a color-code system to let the nation know in what state of danger they are in...

In SA we have a color-code system to tell us when we can take a hot bath.

What makes me laugh is this... "So if we could save that 250MW on geysers in the Cape permanently, we would save ourselves the need to spend R2.5 billion (to build a power station)."
So, if the western cape doesnt use their geysers they need never build a power station... if they had started building the thing at least 5 years ago they wouldnt be in this situation now. And how much longer are they going to use this as a reason not to build one? its about time Eskom's management took a long walk off a short pier. I suppose the R2.5 billion would rather be spent on mercedes benzes and performance bonuses for the management.

Who would have thought that eskom's general manager could be so stupid. I bet he got a nice bonus aswell. With people like this in charge it probably wont be long before power is as rare here as an decent internet connection.

One thing I wonder about though, whats with all the residential aircons being bought these days?

How did these people manage before without them?

I still ignore Eskom when they come with their problems, we pay them to provide a service and currently, due to poor management, its not being provided.

I refuse to alter my lifestyle so that they don't look so bad.

Mbeki seems determined to get SA to carry the rest of Africa as a charity case unfortunately.

There seems to be an invisible bond between African leaders where they seem to think it is okay. They don't consider it charity. They consider it as something that goes without saying...

heh, I can survive without my aircon, but living is just so much better with it....

But it has been getting hotter over the years... so yeah..

Deputy President made a boo boo

Our Deputy President is part of the problem as she put a Moratorium on Eskom not to build any new Power Stations for 5 years in about 1999.
Although the shortages in capacity were already starting to show at that stage, by placing the Power Station Moratorium on Eskom added the Icing to the Melting Cake.
Eskom the Government Organisation it is probably thought this was XMas and time to relax, take 5 and head off to the beach as why should they question the Government when they tell you not to do any work. :D

I say with all due respect to the Deputy President that I am sure her and the Government were oblivious to the complexities of their actions at the time and the ramifications of reigning in Eskom from performing the tasks they are supposed to do so in order to promote new Power Suppliers in the market, be they BEE owned or whatever.
But for all intense and purposes how are these new suppliers supposed to compete with Eskom on price per unit electricity for a start, needless to say the costs involved in building new Power Stations as just one Coal Powered Power Station can run into tens of Billions of Rands. Jeepers who can raise that kind of money.
They (The Government) didn't think this through properly and this is now costing us all money. Thank heavens the previous regime had the vision and built what they did at the time as by now we would all have been deep in the k@k.

Atlantis Gas Fired Turbine:
For your guys information the new 1MW Gas Fired Plant at Atlantis has to be rebuilt as the contractor from Durban was a poopaal. Heard the walls were built skew etc.
What a farce, as some of the best builders in South Africa are the Muslim Builders in the Cape. But yet they had to import some okes from Durbs to come and stuff it up. Wonder what that episode cost?

Lookout! Nutter alert..... but may I remind you all that....

so Koeberg was blamed and electricity down
distracting consumers and making them frown.
While Big Brother worked swiftly to link every town,
every city and suburb, every business and shop

far as I'm concerned the above still applies Fully! Selective Blindness Rules....
