Power saving tips for computers

These days a laptop sure is the way to go even when you have power. At the most my 17" laptop draws 85w but once it's charged that drops drastically.

Getting a second UPS just for your ADSL router? Give me a break!

1A@12V (according to the brick on my Linksys WAG200G) hardly puts any kind of strain even on the smallest UPS.

Just avid the Powercom UPS's, since the bundled software is so bad. There is no option to suspend/hibernate, so whatever you were working on gets forcibly killed when the computer shuts down. What crap!

I won't be going the UPS route. I'm getting a USB adsl modem to use with my laptop when the power goes out. For R 400, It will serve me well.

Power saving tips where yet again the end user has to fork out more money. UPS's, LCD screens, seperate UPS's for the internet (though what for I'm not too sure of - one large UPS will do)

why don't they make computers with laptop type of batteries as well as the option to connect it to an external power source? this battery could charge while it is connected to the external power source. as soon as the external power source goes, the battery kicks in and you can still use your pc for a few minutes/hours. this would prevent the incidents of having your pc immediately shut off and lose data when there's loadshedding.

That's essentially what a UPS is, they just don't make it standard because lots of people don't need it I suppose.

Remove your 2 Geforce 8800GTS's from your PC and start using the onboard graphics... :D

Also, remove your 800W power supply and replace it with a 300W.

If i look at what my set up is at home,i need like 12 ups;'s that cost 1000 rand each,Agg you can switch my power off ezzzkom,I will be getting a fkin good lawyer to drag your @$$ to court and i will win...that is a promise,no doubt

(Off topic) Here's something interesting I just read from IOL.co.za

"Customer usage - Some 36 percent of all Eskom power is consumed by the country's mining houses, which account for about 0,1 percent of Eskom customers. Domestic users, who make up 96 percent of the customer base, consume 12,2 percent of the electricity produced."

If households only 12,2 per cent and all households cut usage by 25% (a tall ask), that only adds 3% back to Eskom for their reserve capacity. We're doomed !!!!!!!!
