Power ships the answer

So why not just build the unit on the freakin ground instead on a ship which also needs additional ssupport not to mention the additonal technical challenges of power transmission from the ship.

They cant even build a bog standard coal power station where there is decades of experience and the want to pull this sh**t ? Sounds like someones tech wet dream and an excuse for a project whose "costs" are going to escalate out of control

I’m not sure if you’ve read the article. These ships belong to a power company who rents them to countries who require power in crisis situations or to supplement their own.
Building it on land kinda defeats the purpose of being mobile.

I think he's working on the assumption that these are built to order... and yes that is the case when its a bigger newer vessel for a new contract... but more often than not they're really old ships that have been converted and can just move from place to place...

They'll have to buy them at the end of the day, fuel em with gas...

I have very little faith that our new stations will ever be completed. We'll still be talking about how over budget and delayed they are in 2030. If by some small miracle they actually do get them running, I'm betting they won't be on for long. There will be some major disaster taking them out due to unqualified peoples in charge of the whole construction process, this is SA, so the highest kickback payers get the contracts, a fraction of cost goes for construction/salaries etc etc... rest is all sitting in private bank accounts. Our new plants are probably being constructed from paper mache or something... and it'll all be blamed on 'apartheid'.

As with all the current medium term solutions, by the time we get the power ship rented, connected and running, we will probably be two years down the line and have a few new coal generators and renewables online anyway..

This is really cute, I'll let you in on a little secret.

It's not going to get better.

One problem - where will they get the fuel neccessary for the ship's operation?

They'll need to lay a new pipe - which requires labour - and we all know what that means.

The powership will bring its own fuel tanker. :D

So which official wants his cut first??? This the start of the POWERGATE scandal?

Impressive. Never knew ships like this even existed. Need to park one in my back yard :)
