How much does winter cost all of you for heat?
We think we're using about R500 gas per person averaged, but a typical family may use more like R900 p/p.

Think it would be 2 to 3 times more if using electric heaters.

Those with solar - how would you calculate it? Usage percentage of capital outlay + needed grid usage?

No idea, remember we have no real picture on what the frak is going on
I just had a proper look and it seems they counting it in the available number because if you don't include pumped hydro, I don't see how they get to those numbers of 24GW.
Coal 19.5GW
Koeberg 0.9GW
Moz 1.3GW
Pumped hydro 2.5GW

Its all relative. A well insulated house would use almost nothing.

True. Even that my bedroom faces north makes a difference.
Maybe something for those who recently switched from the grid / electric heaters to comment on though.

Electric heaters are also relative.

A small IR heater can keep you warm and use 400W.

An inverter aircon can warm the air in a room quite efficiently, way more than an oil heater or something.

Point is, how much does heating/warming without the grid save in personal experience?

Those big oil heaters are 1.5 to 2kw, those little fan ones are 2kw, so run 2 or 3 of those will add 6kw to your demand just in an hour

Okay, let's try work this out...

6 KW @ R1.48 per hour average Eskom charge (Jan '23) = R8.88 p/h

Edit: Supplied info was wrong - correct charge is closer to R2.48 per hour, see next page

A 9 Kg heater bottle wholesale just cost me R280, with petrol maybe R300.

I get about 105 hours out of that and about equivalent heat as any oil / fan units so don't agree with the direct conversion given - again a matter of heater efficiency here I suppose.

Anyway, works out to R2.86 p/h x 3 heaters = R8.58 p/h. So very little difference at the mo, although gas cost has increased a lot recently.
