Back to the Jo'burg efforts to improve residents' circumstances - I'm wondering why they need to consult with Eskom about it? Surely all Eskom can do is set power-shedding requirements for them, how it's managed is nobody's business??

Anyone here have any idea why that consulting need then?

To mathematically extrapolate your guesstimate: I would say that load shifting grows proportional to the number of stages divided by the maximum. This is equivalent to the percentage of the population off at any time, or 1/16 = 6.25%.

Stage 1 would have shifting of 62.5MW, Stage 4 would have shifting of 250MW, etc.

Cumulative totals would be Stage 4 = (1 + 2 + 3 + 4) / 16 = 625MW. Stage 6 = 21/16 = 1.3GW. Stage 8 = 36/16 = 2.2 GW. Stage 10 = 55/16 = 3.4GW.

Edit: These numbers probably have no basis in reality, and obviously don't make sense above Stage 12, but do suggest that shifting is cumulative and not linear. Perhaps someone can suggest a better approximation. The transition from 2 hour to 4 hour slots obviously makes a huge difference between Stage 4, and Stages 5-8.

nope it's an IPP, has been for about 20 odd years now. Parts of it were used by Eskom to stabilise the grid.

Thanks, so the IPP favours city use over Eskom in general, or Jo'burg is just being hopeful?

The IPP favours whomever pays them :-). At one point we were supposed to get help from Kelvin and we did for a brief period, but Eskom threw their toys and we stopped.

Back to that then - Eskom controlling what shouldn't be their business. Then again, money is always the boss so I guess my question is answered.

Well it wouldn't be if people hadn't gotten inverters and such, but it is now cause it's like crud we literally cannot shed anymore as it just comes to bite us.
